Protests turn deadly in Thailand
This picture evokes a sense of fear and really portrays a sense of rebellious against the government. When I saw this picture, I automatically thought of the song Testify by Rage Against the Machine. They are very proactive with the thought of protesting against the government and this song has a hate-filled sense to it that makes every listener want to get up and do something about the lacking government. This picture shows a man ducking from gunfire and violence and trying to get away while in the background you can see the turmoil and protesting of Thailand.

Vietnam, 35 years later
This picture is a great black and white picture of Vietnam and the American troops getting brought into it. This is a good opener to the war and almost makes you feel a part of the war. When I first saw this picture I thought about I Feel like I’m Fixing to Die Rag by Country Joe and the Fish. This song is a huge anti-war song specifically for Vietnam and was created in the time of the war. I remember hearing this song in the Woodstock documentary and ever since then the song comes to mind when any Vietnam War related pictures/videos/etc. is shown. Many soldiers died during this war and all this song really talks about is how everyone who goes is going to die. It’s a great example as a war protest song and really conveys the overall truth of the Vietnam War, just like the picture does.

Checking in on Saturn
This picture is a good, close-up of Saturn, a huge planet that is so mysterious because of its distance from the Earth. It makes you feel like you’re in outer space and you’re a captain of a spaceship. Space Oddity by David Bowie comes to mind for this specific song, which is a great example of a first person view as a spaceship pilot. The song is slow and makes you actually feel like you’re in space and really seems to fit perfectly with this picture. This could also work with the “First of the last Space Shuttle Launches” picture, which shows a space ship about to take off in a dim lighted background in the middle of the night. Both these pictures could easily go with this song and send out the same feeling and mood.

The picture of the small group of Thai soldiers reminds me of the song "Buffalo Soldier." There is no excact likeness but for somereason that song pops into my head when i look at that photo.

The Picture of Saturn and its moon reminds me of the song "Space Oddity" because that song is about an astronaut and the peacefulness and serenity of the music seem as celestial as the photo itself

The photo of the Space Shuttle lift off at night really reminds me of the song "In The Air Tonight" by Phil Collins because the calm night before the violent lift off makes it kind of a calm before the storm and that song indicates that something is going to happen tonight.

Crackdown in Bangkok + Green Day — 21 Guns
When I see this picture of soldiers and guns I think of the song “21 guns “by Green Day. I think of the song because the first words of the song are “Do you know what's worth fighting for/When it's not worth dying for?” Also, the chorus is “One, 21 guns/Lay down your arms/Give up the fight/One, 21 guns/Throw up your arms into the sky/you and I.” When I look at the picture I think of war and just wanting to give up and that it’s not worth it, which is what the song is saying.

First of the last Space Shuttle launches + Incubus- Stellar
When looking at this picture of the space shuttle, I immediately thought of the song “Stellar”
by Incubus. The song is about meeting in outer space and parts of the lyrics are “Meet me in outer space. We could spend the night; watch the earth come up.” Seeing the shuttle launching to space is a good representation of this song.

Flooding in Tennessee + Jay Z- Empire State of Mind
In this picture of flooding in Tennessee, there is a city skyline. It reminds me of how a New York City skyline or looking into some kind of city. Therefore, I linked this song with “Empire State of Mind” by Jay Z featuring Alicia Keys. The chorus of the song is “New York/Concrete jungle where dreams are made of/There's nothin' you can't do/Now you're in New York/These streets will make you feel brand new/Big lights will inspire you.” This song reminds me of the picture because it’s about New York and the picture shows a city that reminds me of New York so they are linked together.

1) The picture of birds flying over the gulf of mexico reminds me of the song
“fly” by Sugar Ray. It mostly reminds me of this song because the chorus of this song is “I just wanna fly/put your arms around me baby”. All the birds are flying together away so this reminds song reminds me of the picture. Also, there is a line that says “All around the world statues crumble for me”. This line reminds me of the picture because the birds are flying all around the world to get away from the oil leaking in Venice, Louisana.
2) Released prisoner of war Lt. Col. Robert L. Stirm is greeted by his family at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California
This picture reminds me of the song “home” by chris daughtry. The soldier is running to his family arms and it perfectly goes with the lyrics “im comin home, to a place where I belong”. Also, the lyrics “where your love has always been enough for me.” These lyrics go perfectly with the picture because the man is coming home from war and all he needs is family and that’s all the matters to him at this point. The song also goes with the picture because the lyrics that say” I don’t regret this life I chose for me, but these places and these faces are getting old” reminds him that he doesn’t regret going to war but he’s sick of it all and wants to be with his family.

3) The picture of the Don Sphynx cat sitting at an international cat show reminds me of the song
“im a diva” by beyonce. The cat is wearing a pink sweater with jewels on it and the first thing I thought of was “diva.” Also when the cat “walks” at its show this song should be playing because cats are in a way divas. They like to be alone and get annoyed easily.

Oil reaches Louisiana shores : When I saw this picture the song that came to mind was Fireflies by Owl City. The picture is of a dragonfly that is being affected by the oil spill. The lyrics “You would not believe your eyes/ If ten million fireflies/ Lit up the world as I fell asleep,” these lyrics basically contradict the picture because the picture is basically showing how the oil is affecting several of the insects. Owl City says “But I would just stand and stare,” him saying this is saying that there are so many fireflies and insects that he would just stand and stare but in reality they are being affected by the oil spill and other environmental problems.

Vietnam, 35 years later: When I saw this picture the song that came to mind was American Soldier by Toby Keith. The lyrics just work straight through the holidays / And sometimes all night long / You can bet that I stand ready when the wolf growls at the door/ Hey, I'm solid, hey I'm steady, hey I'm true down to the core/ And I will always do my duty, no matter what the price/ I've counted up the cost, I know the sacrifice. The lyrics I just work straight through the holidays/ And sometimes all night long./ You can bet that I stand ready when the wolf growls at the door/ Hey, I'm solid, hey I'm steady, hey I'm true down to the core/ And I will always do my duty, no matter what the price, I've counted up the cost, I know the sacrifice, These lyrics are explaining how the soldiers don’t have time off of work and they are sacrificing their own life to fight for our country. Keith is also explaining how you have to be solid and strong to fight in a war that may last days and nights of your life. Being in war is not easy and I think we can see this in both the lyrics of the song and the picture that is shared on the website “The Big Picture.”

First of the last space shuttle launches: When I saw this picture the song that came to mind was Steller by Incubus. The lyrics “meet me in outerspace,” resembles the space shuttle that is about to take off to space. Incubus is saying how beautiful earth is, that he would love to bring his loved one there. They are both similar because both the lyrics and pictures are talking about how space is important and it is something that should be explored.

The connection that visuals can have with song lyrics is very common. Such images as displayed on, “The Big Picture,” tie together that specific image with a song. In Bangkok, Thailand, there have been many current protests going on and they have declared a state of emergency. The image of the man who seems to be contained within a burning building makes me think of the song, “Heartbreak Warfare” by, John Mayer. The context of the song has nothing to do with what is currently taking place in Thailand but, the imagery throughout the song makes me think of the picture. Certain lines of the song come to me when I see this picture; “Clouds of sulfur in the air/Bombs are falling in the air/Once you want it to begin, no one ever really wins…” (John Mayer). Mayer uses a war-like description throughout his song that could be tied together with this image. Off of the Malaysian island, Layang, a scuba diver viewed the world “Under The Sea.” The song, “Under The Sea,” has a strong connection with this visual for me. The song, “Under The Sea,” uses lyrics such as; “Nothing is better, nothing is wetter, under the sea…” (The Little Mermaid). Seeing as though the entire movie that this song is derived from revolves around the sea, it has a very strong connection with the visual of the scuba diver. The final image is of a NASA shuttle launch. The image of the shuttle taking off reminds me of the song, “Taking Chances.” This song, sung by Celine Dion, is an uplifting song about going for your dreams and taking risks. The song contains certain lyrics such as; “What do you say to taking chances? /What do you say to jumping off the edge? /Never knowing if there’s solid ground below/ Or a hand to hold/ Or hell to pay, what do you say?” (Celine Dion). The image of the shuttle take-off is all about taking chances and not really knowing what is going to happen; I believe that this is a perfect song that coincides well with this image. Using images, the brain makes connections to help you remember something better. These images help to better connect themselves for you with the use of song lyrics. The power of making connections with images and lyrics is unlimited.

This photo reminds me of the song Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield. The caption of this photo, “A bear cools down in the water at the zoo in Gelsenkirchen, western Germany, Thursday, April 29, 2010 as Germany faced the hottest day this year so far, with temperatures up to 28 degrees Celsius (82 Fahrenheit). (AP Photo/Martin Meissner)” is the happiest caption out of all in that album. This bear is just enjoying life without a care in the world. This photo reminded me of the verse, “Feel the rain on your skin No one else can feel it for you Only you can let it in No one else, no one else Can speak the words on your lips” it’s describing freedom and the bear just swimming around in the water reminds me of freedom because there’s no one who tells him what he can and can’t do.

This picture of Saturn’s limb and upper atmosphere reminds me of the song “Eclipse” by Pink Floyd because the last words of the song are “There is no dark side of the moon really. Matter of fact it’s all dark.” Although this is picture of Saturn it looks like it has a dark side and when I saw this picture “Eclipse” popped into my head.

The lyrics to the song “Mailbox Arson” by Alexisonfire comes into mind every time I view this picture of the city hall burning in Bangkok. The lyrics “I watch the smoke start to rise/ One hundred homes, one hundred fires/ Now everything you own now burns away.” These lyrics remind me of this picture because it shows a city in Bangkok burning and the song is about a city burning and how everything is no longer theirs. Also, Bangkok looks like it is being invaded in this picture which is what this song is also about and how nothing is private anymore.

This picture of an infantry soldier from the Vietnam war reminds me of the song “Unknown Soldier” by Breaking Benjamin because the lyrics “Full of fear/ Ever clear/ I’ll be here/ Fighting forever.” Is describing a soldier and how he is going to fight forever.

Girl Holding Her Sister - “I’ll Stand By You” by the Pretenders

The picture of the small Afghan girl holding her young sister depicts the Pretenders “I’ll Stand By You”. By holding tightly to her sister, the Afghan child portrays that “[she’ll] never desert [her sister]”. In the same way, because the smallest sister most likely fully depends on her older sister, this song parallels the feelings and the devotion that the older of the two girls has toward the other.

Anti-War Demonstrations and Protests – “Come Together” by the Beatles

When I look at this picture, I am reminded of the song “Come Together” by the Beatles. During the Vietnam War, thousands of people joined forces as a means of protesting and displaying their anti-war beliefs. As is described in the song, many people with many backgrounds “came together” during this time in order to fight a common cause. The Beatles also described the belief that “you got to be free”, which was a reoccurring theme at anti-Vietnam War protests.

Oil Slicked Bird Attempts to Get Out of the Water – “Try” by Hayden Panettiere

The image of the small, oil-slicked bird in the Gulf of Mexico attempting to scale the side of a supply vessel mirrors the message that is depicted in Hayden Panettiere’s “Try”. Presently, the predicament that the bird finds itself in “seems impossible” to overcome. However, because its life depends on finding dry land where it can clean itself, the bird must continue to “try” and achieve what seems unattainable at the time. The message of the song is to never give up and let “nothing hold you back”, which is portrayed in the birds efforts to save its own life.

Vietnam War
This picture reminds me of the song “You Can Go Your Own Way” by Fleetwood Mac. This song comes from the movie Forest Gump which helped me to pick it for the picture. I felt it was an appropriate choice for the picture because it’s like the Americans are walking away from the hell that they have gone through. “You can go your own way, go your own way, you can call it another lonely day.” I feel like this is often how the soldiers felt after a long day of fighting, as well as long years of fighting and coming home, they felt lost and confused on how to start back up with life.

Flooding in Tennessee
This picture reminds me of the song “Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue, by Toby Keith. “American girls and American guys will always stand up and salute. We'll always recognize, when we see ol' glory flying.” This part of the song can really be related to this picture, it shows that no matter what pain America is going through our flag will always be there letting us know that we many people supporting us. It shows that when we see our flag fly!

Oil Reaches Louisiana
This picture reminds me of the song, “Paint it Black” by The Rolling Stones. The song doesn’t have to do with oil but I felt that these peoples world has been tarnished by oil, just like their world has been painted black, everything around them is gone and covered in a gross color. “I look inside myself and see my heart is black, I see my red door and must have it painted black. Maybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the facts, It's not easy facin' up when your whole world is black.”

This poor dog is a stray found in Japan. He will be terminated because the people of Japan believe that strays have a bad attitude and behavior that is reckless and they don’t want those traits to be passed on. Therefore, almost all strays found are terminated. I detest this. I believe it is animal cruelty. It reminds me of the song I’ll stand by you. This song by the Pretenders is used in the commercial to adopt neglected, abandoned, and abused pets. It is so sad and it reminded me of the verse, “Oh why you look so sad, tears are in your eyes come on and come to me now don’t be ashamed to cry” this poor dog is going to be killed for no good reason and he’s behind bars so he is sad and looks like he’s crying.

1. First of the Last Space Shuttle Launches #38. In the photo, six astronauts, from Space Shuttle Atlantis, stand infront of their transport vehicle at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, FL on May 14, 2010. A song that can be related to this photo is Leaving On a Jet Plane by Peter, Paul and Mary. In the movie Armageddon, astronauts are dressed in same suits shown here. At one point, one of the astornauts starts to sing this song as a goodbye to his girlfriend.

2. Vietnam, 35 Years Later #16. In December of 1965, demonstrators in Berkeley, CA march against the war in Vietnam. Here, the demonstrators hold up signs protesting war. A song that can be related to this photogragh is the song War by Edwin Starr. The lyrics in the song that mostly relate to it is the chorus, "War..huh...yeah..what is it good for? absolutley nothing."

3. Oil Reaches Louisiana Shores #21. On May 23, 2010 an oil soaked pilican is shown in the water, trying to take flight after OLouisiana Fish and Wildlife employees tried to corral him on an island in Barataria Bay. The song Blackbird by The Beatles is a song that can be related to this photo. the lryics that best fit are, "Blackbird singing in the dead of night, take these broken wings and learn to fly, all your life, you were only waiting for this moment to arise."

Under the pictures of the Vietnam War, there is a picture of a field of U.S soldiers with helicopters flying overhead. All of the soldiers are looking down at the ground. This photograph reminds me of a song called "Uncommon Valor (A Vietnam Story)" by Jedi Mind Tricks. In Jedi's song, he raps a verse saying, "I don't know why I'm over here this job is evil, They send me here to Vietnam to kill innocent people" which relates to the picture because all of the soldiers look very unhappy.

In a picture of two giraffes faces and necks, their necks almost make the shape of a heart together. This picture reminds me of the song "One Love" by Bob Marley. The two giraffes look very at ease with each other and happy to be together. The photo reminds my of Bob Marley's line, "One love, one heart, let's get together and feel alright."

In the album of the Vietnam war, there is a picture of a South Vietnamese general pointing a gun to a Viet Cong to kill him. This photo reminds me of the song "Scream Aim Fire" by Bullet for my Valentine because or the quote "Kill your enemies, my brothers dead around me." This reminds me of that song because the Vietnamese general is killing somebody from him own country, which they could be considered "brothers."

Widow at sergeant’s funeral-“Just a Dream” by Carrie Underwood
The song “Just a Dream” by Carrie Underwood reminds me of this picture. The song is about a young girl, “It was two weeks after the day she turned 18,” who had to got to her husbands funeral. You know that he was in the army when she sings, “then they handed her a folded up flag and /she held on to all she had left of him oh and what could’ve been.” A flag is cover the casket shown in the picture and it is tradition to give the family the flag before the solider is buried. The tone of the song which is very sad also matches the feeling of the picture.

Red Shirt revolt against the government in Thailand – “21 Guns” by Green Day
This picture reminds me of the song “21 Guns” by Green Day. The lyrics of the song would lead me to imagine a scene like the one depicted in the picture. The overall feeling of the song and lines like, “Your faith walks on broken glass/And the hangover doesn't pass/Nothing's ever built to last/You're in ruins,” I believe would accurately describe the feeling that this picture gives me. The man in the background does not seem like he is ready or willing to fight. The sing is about how if, “Do you know what's worth fighting for/When it's not worth dying for?”I can only imagine a depressing scene like the one above to display the tone of the song in a visual way. Bullet holes through a glass window on a deserted street with a fire barricade in the background and a man just trying to get away shows the misfortune and desperateness of the song.

Space Shuttle Atlantis lifts off- “Space Oddity” by David Bowie
The song Space Oddity by David Bowie can be seen as a two person dialogue between the astronaut in a space shuttle and ground control. In this picture, Space Shuttle Atlantis is taking off on its last mission. In the song, the situation and events is described and inferred by the listener. They talk about the lift off an how well it went, as did this launch. But also, in the song, it is the last mission for the shuttle and the astronaut because he loses power in space and he cannot survive without it.

Rebelution, Educated Fools
We see their faces on the television screen
Telling us these lies if you know what I mean
Why do we follow? Why do we believe?
The words that they say when we know they deceive

So here's an opportunity to see the big picture
Don't fortune these fake idols and fixtures
We're coming up now, excuse me Mr.
This is our time to shine

We know they do not know what they do
But they lie every day to me and you
These educated fools

These politicians
are on a mission
Telling us lies through the television
Another string being pulled
by these educated fools
Who have the money
To get what they want
Now its time we give them what they need
So come on people
This is our mission
Open up your eyes and see

We know they do not know what they do
But they lie every day to me and you
These educated fools

The second match I made is the song Educated Fools by Rebelution and picture 31 in Disaster unfolds slowly in the Gulf of Mexico. The song is about how the government and politicians simply tell us what they want us to know and think. This is very similar to the recent oil spill in the Gulf. Constantly there is a new plan that were told is going to work but the spill continues to grow and destroy important wildlife. The clean up efforts are becoming surprisingly ineffective.

Buffalo Springfield, For What It's Worth
There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware
I think it's time we stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind
I think it's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
What a field-day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side
It's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away
We better stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, now, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

I chose to match this third song with picture 17 in Vietnam, 35 years later. This song describes what is happening in America during Vietnam perfectly. Both the song and the picture show just how much controversy there was over the point of the Vietnam war.

Matisyahu, One Day
sometimes I lay
under the moon
and thank God I'm breathing
then I pray
don't take me soon
cause I am here for a reason
sometimes in my tears I drown
but I never let it get me down
so when negativity surrounds
I know some day it'll all turn around
because
all my life I've been waiting for
I've been praying for
for the people to say
that we don't wanna fight no more
they'll be no more wars
and our children will play
one day x6
it's not about
win or lose
we all lose
when they feed on the souls of the innocent
blood drenched pavement
keep on moving though the waters stay raging
in this maze you can lose your way (your way)
it might drive you crazy but don't let it faze you no way (no way)
sometimes in my tears I drown
but I never let it get me down
so when negativity surrounds
I know some day it'll all turn around
because
all my life I've been waiting for
I've been praying for
for the people to say
that we don't wanna fight no more
they'll be no more wars
and our children will play
one day x6
one day this all will change
treat people the same
stop with the violence
down with the hate
one day we'll all be free
and proud to be
under the same sun
singing songs of freedom like
one day x4
all my life I've been waiting for
I've been praying for
for the people to say
that we don't wanna fight no more
they'll be no more wars
and our children will play
one day x6
ooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

These lyrics match up perfectly with picture 33 in Protests Turn Deadly in Thailand. In the picture there is a sign that says "stop killing we are all Thai" That is the exact message Matisyahu is trying to get across in his song "One Day". We are all people and killing each other is useless and counter productive.
