POS: Backmasking and Reverse Speech in Music

Backward messaging in music (commonly known as backmasking) has been a controversy ever since the late 1960s, when messages were found backwards on some Beatles' albums, hinting that Paul McCartney had died. Some of these subliminal messages have been identified as purposeful while some are apparently inadvertent. Some believe that many of these backward messages were in fact examples of "Reverse Speech" in music. Speech reversals occur naturally in all forms of speech, sung or spoken. Explore some of the links and sites regarding this subject and offer your opinion on at least 10 specific examples. Do you buy into the theory of Reverse Speech or is it all a bunch of hogwash?

THE THEORY OF REVERSE SPEECH AND SPEECH COMPLEMENTARITY.

(1) Human speech has two distinctive yet complementary functions and modes. The Overt mode is spoken forwards and is primarily under conscious control. The Covert mode is spoken backward and is not under conscious control. The backward mode of speech occurs simultaneously with the forward mode and is a reversal of the forward speech sounds.

(2) These two modes of speech, forward and backward, are dependent upon each other and form an integral part of human communication. One mode cannot be fully understood without the other mode. In the dynamics of interpersonal communication, both modes of speech combined communicate the total psyche of the person, conscious as well as unconscious.

(3) Covert speech develops before overt speech. Children speak backwards before they do forwards. Then, as forward speech commences, the two modes of speech gradually combine into one, forming an overall bi-level communication process.

Reverse speech occurs in Missey Elliot's "Work It" I gotta flip it down and reverse it. Also occurrs in Eminem's "My Name is" hi, my name is what, my name is who, slam shady. George Harrison's "Here Comes the Sun" here comes the sun and I say it's alright. And Doobie Brother's "Black Water" i wanna walk and talk with u @ 3:22 and 3:45. 30h!3's "Don't Trust Me" @ 2:21 whoa!!, whoa!!, no, no, no, no is murmured in the background.

I do not believe in this whole backmasking stuff. I think it's just a coincidence that there is a message hidden in a song sung from the heart or of personal experiences.I do think it is kind of cool.

2. ringo starr- honey don't- "my god is so stubbon"
3.george harrison- while my guitar gently weeps- "pass the gun now. it kills the love, the love is cold"
4.paul mccartney- band on the run- "marijuana, marijuana. the law, the law will banish us."
5. queen- another one bites the dust- "its fun to smoke marijuana"
6.britney spears- baby one more time- "sleep with me, i'm not too young"
7.missy elliot- work it- "watch the way missy like to take it backwards"
8.tupac- this life i lead- "yes i'm alive, and me missing you"
9.electric light orchestra- fire on high- "the music is reversible, but time is not. turn back! turn back! turn back! turn back!"
10.led zeppelin- stairway to heaven- "oh here’s to my sweet satan.the one whose little path would make me sad, whose power is satan.he will give those with him six six six.there was a little tool shed where he made us suffer, sad satan”

Here's some other examples of backmasking:

Rammstein's "Stirb Nicht Vor Mir" which in English translates to "Don't Die Before I do",he sort of mumbles stirb nicht vor mecht which means don't die, mean while she says "I know that you exist". He says it twice; once at 2:31 and again at 3:42. It's kind of a romantic song about them dying for each other when he is not so sincere while she is.

Rammstein's "Mutter" which in English means Mother. Really quietly in the background people are saying "miss u" while he says "mutter". His mom passed away when he was little and he talks about trying really hard to save her.

Evanescence "Bring Me Back To Life"
must stop it all is uttered in the background of saying "don't let me die here".

1. Stairway to Heaven: I do not think that the song backwords is just naturally embedded with verses about Satan. It is far to coincidental with the opposite correlation to the actual song.
2.Kiss Kiss Kiss: I think that this was not an intentional verse backwords. It is a pure coincidence that this song sounds like "I shot John Lennon" backwords.
3.Hotel California: This song played backwords is a bit of a stretch. It barely sounded like a real sentance. I think it was just a coincidence.
4. Beat it: I also cannot make out a realistic sentance. It does not seem intentional.
5.I'm so tired: I feel that this is backmasking. I think this because there was no need for the mumbled tone (verse played forward), but when played backwords it was surprisingly clean what the lyrics were.
6.Pokemon song: I think this song was also coincidental. If this was a hidden message a lot more little boys would be worshiping Satan! haha...
7.Empty Spaces: The message was indistinguishable forwards. However, when played backwards the sentance was way to in depth and clear to be pure coincidence. I think this was backmasking.
8.Fire on High: The song played backwards was blataintly recorded in a studio and put into the song backwards. I feel it was backmasking.
9.Revolution 9: I feel this is just a coincidence. The backwards lyrics are not very prominent.
10.Another One Bites the Dust: I think this is backmasking because the lyrics played backwards clearly depicted the words "marijuana" which is quite a complicated word to be played by chance.

The 10 songs I picked for backmasking are Stairway To Heaven, Imagine, I'm So Tired, Kiss Kiss Kiss, My Name Is..., Hotel California, Another One Bites The Dust, Beat it, Baby One More Time, and Paparazzi.

In the song Stairway to Heaven, the lyrics forward are "If there's a bustle in your hedgerow don't be alaramed now. It's just the spring clean for the May queen. Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run there's still time to change the road you're on". The reverse lyrics are "Oh here's to my sweet Satan. The one whose little path would make me sad, whose power is Satan. He'll give those with him 666, there was a little toolshed where he made us suffer, sad Satan". I think that this was not intentional because The reverse lyrics don't make too much sense. People over analyze too much sometimes.

In the song Imagine, the forward lyrics are "Imagine all the people". The reverse lyrics are "The people war beside me". Again, I don't think this was on purpose. I don't even think this makes sense at all. It doesn't even sound like it played backwards...

In the song I'm So Tired, there is a part where there is a bunch of gibberish. When you play is backwards it says "Paul is a dead man. Miss him, miss him, miss him". In a way I believe it because why would they put random gibberish in the song. I can hear it pretty well played backwards...At the same time, I don't believe it because the Beatles were so close and I don't think they'd wish death against eachother.

In the song Kiss Kiss Kiss, there is chinese that say's "Anata, Daiteyo" which translates to be Darling, hug me. Backwards it says, "I shot John Lennon". I don't agree with this at all. It doesn't even sound like she's saying that.

In the song My Name Is..., the song forward says "HI my name is (what?) My name is (who?) My name is (scratches) Slim Shady. (repeated)". Backwards it says "It is Slim. It's Eminem, it's Eminem...etc". I do think this is on purpose just because he does like to say his name a lot in his songs.

In the song Hotel California, the lyrics forward are "In the middle of the night, just to hear them say". Backwards it says, "Satan he hears this. He had me believe". I don't think this is on purpose because it such a happy song and the Eagles don't seem to be a Satan believeing band. I also can't really hear the backwards lyrics very clear.

In the song Another One Bites The Dust, the lyrics played forward are "Another one bites the dust". Backwards it says, "It's fun to smoke marijuana". I don't believe this is on purpose. I can hear it, but I don't think that was Queen's purpose of the song.

In the song Beat It, the lyrics played forward are "Tell you it's fair so beat it". Backwards it says, "I believe it was Satan in me". This was obviously not on purpose because from what I recall, Michael Jackson believed in God...It doesn't even sound like it's saying it.

In the song Baby One More Time, the lyrics played forward are, "With you I lose my mind give me a sign". Backwards it says "Sleep with me, I'm not too young". I'd believe it just because she was kind of a hussy. Especially as she grew up.

In the song Paparazzi, the song played forward says, "There's no other superstar you know that I'll be your papa-paparazzi. Promise I'll be kind". Played backwards it says "Evil save us, the stars above, above...we model it on the arts of Lucifer". This isn't on purpose because I know Gaga is a very charitable and kind-loving person and I don't think she would rely on evil in her music...

1. Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin
This song has some definite backmasking technique hidden within specific lines. The irony of the song is that it references heaven, while backwards it references Hell through using Satan's name. The lines are too pronounced and clear for it not to be considered backmasking; it seems intentional.

2. Imagine by John Lennon
The only reason why it may be considered reverse speech is because of the lyrics that were put with the song, meaning it does not sound clear if one listens to the song  without reading the lyrics. The suggested lyrics sound ironic because it uses war, while John Lennon promoted peace in the anti-war movement.

3. Paparazzi by Lady Gaga
There are hints of intentional backmasking in the lyrics, due to the clarity of the words when heard backwards. The beginning lyrics say “Evil save us...” while in her actual song does not promote the same content. The backmasking lyrics may have the hidden message that the world is full of hidden evils, like parts of the Hollywood business, and many use those evils to save themselves due to their lifestyle.

4. Beat it by Michael Jackson
The suggested reversed lyrics are not coherent enough to be considered any form of reversed lyrics or backmasking. However, I do believe that in other songs Jackson may of intentionally used backmasking due to the creativity he had with music.

5.Baby One More Time by Brittany Spears
The backmasking lyrics sound convincing enough that Spears made the intentional effort to incorporate them into her original lyrics. Her music is naturally intended to be seductive, and the backmasking lyrics of, “Sleep with me, I’m not too young” can relate to her past relationships of dating older men when she first started her pop career.

6. Kiss, Kiss, Kiss by Yoko Ono
The backmasking lyrics could be translated into any words that have the same number of syllables as the suggested lyrics, thus meaning she did not intentionally say “I shot John Lennon.” Many people were not big fans of Yoko Ono and had the potential of using these lyrics against her.

7. Another One Bites the Dust by Queen
The lyrics sound like they could be intentional backmasking, but I believe it was just a coincidence. It does not sound exactly like how the words would be read how they were said in the song.

8.Break On Through by The Doors
Due to the shortness of the lyrics I do not believe the backmasking was intentional, but it sounds pretty close to the suggested lyrics. The reverse lyrics have no connection to the regular lyrics strengthening my believe that it was only a coincidence.

9.My Name Is...by Eminem
There is definite backmasking in the lyrics due to the connection of the song title and the suggested reversed lyrics. It is a very creative twist to his song.

10. I’m So Tired by The Beatles
Many would assume that the backmasking in this song is intentional due to previous rumors of Paul McCartney being dead, but the reversed lyrics are a bit of a stretch when the music is played with them. But, the subtle hints are what got the suspicions to occur in the first place, so why not this one too? It is indeed a mystery behind The Beatles.

I believe the back masking in Britney Spears song, Baby One More Time, was meant to be there. I think this because of the way Britney comes across. She has been seen as a sexual figure for years. Even when she was younger some people had this thought about Britney. Therefore, I think she secretly wants people to think this way about her.

In the Beatles song, I’m So Tired, the back masking message is “Paul is a dead man. Miss him, miss him, miss him”. This was meant to be a back masking message because of the controversy of whether or not Paul was actually dead. Nobody really knew the truth because the Beatles found a look alike to take Paul’s place. The message was said as proof that Paul had died.

Pink Floyd put a message in their song just for fun. In the song, Empty Spaces, the back masking is “Congratulations. You have just discovered the secret message. Please send your message to old pink, care of the funny farm, Chalfont.” I think this was a joke because it doesn’t have meaning and it sounds like they were just doing back masking for fun.

I do not believe the back masking in the Popeye the Sailor Man theme song is true. When the song is played backwards it is hard to message. It sounds more like somebody is just trying to make a message up that really is not there at all.

Since the Beatles were known for back masking I do believe the in the message in the song Help. The message that is revealed when the song is played backwards is “Now he uses marijuana.” This was discovered around the same time the Beatles tried drugs so this makes the back masking even more believable.

In Lady Gaga’s song Paparazzi there is said to be back masking. The message that suppose to be heard is “Evil save us, the stars above, above…we model it in the arts of Lucifer”. I do not think this message is said because nothing can be heard when the song is played backwards. It sounds like random sounds and not words.

Just like Lady Gaga’s song and the theme song to Popeye the Sailor Man, I think the Pokémon theme song also does not have back masking. When played backwards people are suppose to hear “I love Satan. I love Satan. I love Satan. I love Satan.” However, to me this seems like another person just trying to make another song have back masking when it really doesn’t.

Another song I believe to be true by Paul McCartney is Band on the Run. The back masking is “Marijuana. The law, law will banish us”. I believe this because Paul was banished from Japan after using marijuana.

I also think the back masking in Another One Bites the Dust is true because it can clearly be heard.

1. PAPARAZZI -LADY GAGA
Forward lyrics: "There's no other superstar you know that I'll be your papa, paparazzi. Promise I'll be kind...
"Reversed lyrics": "Evil save us. The stars above, above... we model it on the arts of Lucifer."
When played reversed, the line "Evil save us" is sort of audible. But besides that, I think this case of backmasking is crap. If the lyrics had not been provided for me, I would not have known there were any traces of reverse speech.

2. KISS, KISS, KISS -YOKO ONO
Forward lyrics: "Anata, daiteyo" (= Darling, hug me)
"Reversed lyrics": "I shot John Lennon"
Why would Yoko Ono admit to shooting John Lennon? Even if it is "reverse speech", why would she risk getting caught or blamed? Again, if the lyrics had not been provided for me I would not have even known what was being said.

3. POKEMON RAP
Forward lyrics: "Gotta catch em all, gotta catch em all (yo) Gotta catch em all, gotta catch em all (yeah)"
"Reversed lyrics": "I love Satan, I love Satan. I love Satan, I love Satan"
As entertaining as it would be if it were true, I believe this case of backmasking is also hogwash. When played reversed it just sounds like random shouting. If you read the lyrics and then listen to it, the words "I love Satan" are somewhat audible but I do not think the composer intentionally did this.

4. BABY ONE MORE TIME -BRITNEY SPEARS
Forward lyrics: "...With you I lose my mind, give me a siii-"
"Reversed lyrics": "Sleep with me, I'm not to young"
Another entertaining case of "backmasking", and the lyrics are actually audible in this one. But I still think it was unintentional despite Britney's promiscuous history.

5. BEAT IT -MICHAEL JACKSON
Lyrics: "...Tell you it's fair, so beat it"
"Reversed lyrics": "I believe it was Satan in me"
The "reversed lyrics" are not audible at all in this one. Even after reading them and listening to piece backwards again, I still could not hear it.

Mel said...

6. HOTEL CALIFORNIA -EAGLES
Lyrics: "...In the middle of the night, just to hear them say"
"Reversed lyrics": "Satan, he hears this. He had me believe."
This one is also not audible at all. I listened to it multiple times, and even more after reading the lyrics, but still could hear anything.

7. ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST -QUEEN
Lyrics: "Another one bites the dust, Another bites the dust, Another one bites the dust, Another one bites the dust"
"Reversed lyrics": "It's fun to smoke marijuana, It's fun to smoke marijuana, It's fun to smoke marijuana, It's fun to smoke marijuana"
This case of backmasking is one of the more believable and audible ones. This one does not pertain to anything that has to with Satan, they are just making a statement about something a lot of people do- smoke marijuana.

8. BREAK ON THROUGH -THE DOORS
Lyrics: "...treasure's there"
"Reversed lyrics": "I am Satan"
The message in this is so short and simple, it makes me think it is unintentional. You can take a lot of lyrics and play them backwards and say they sound like "I am Satan" or "I love Satan" or "I admire Satan" etc, etc. But just because some sound that way, does not mean the artist is a demon.

9. I'M SO TIRED -THE BEATLES
Lyrics: *indistinguishable*
"Reversed lyrics": "Paul is a dead man. Miss him, miss him, miss him."
I think since the words are indistinguishable when played forward that this case of backmasking is intentional. But, I think The Beatles were just doing it as a sort of inside joke to go along with rumor that Paul died.

10. FIRE ON HIGH -ELO
Lyrics: *indistinguishable*
"Reversed lyrics": "The music is reversible, but time is not...turn back, turn back, turn back, turn back"
This one is my favorite; it is the most audible and the creepiest. This one was obviously done on purpose, see as how it tells you right in the lyrics. It does not contain a satanic message but does still have an eery feel to it.

Pink's "Dear Mr. President"-- do you know how hard it is for us regular people to live everyday.

1. “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin is said to have a hidden message of Satanic worship when played backwards. When listening to the song forwards and backwards, I do not believe that there are any true messages, intentional or unintentional, hidden within the lyrics. Any word with an “s” in it seems to always be interpreted to mean the word “Satan” when played backwards, which is completely ridiculous.
2. In Britney Spears’s “Baby One More Time,” the song played backwards supposedly says “Sleep with me, I’m not too young.” I do not believe this is intentional because this particular song was not written by Britney Spears, or even a woman for that matter. However, I do believe that the message is there. Even without the help of the lyrics telling me what it is supposed to say, I was able to hear the exact message.
3. In Weird Al’s satire, “Nature Trail to Hell,” there is a definite, intentional example of backmasking that is clearly heard: “Satan eats Cheez Whiz.” Weird Al is known for making fun of songs and celebrities, so I believe that this is on purpose to satirize the use of backmasking in songs.
4. In The Doors’s “Break On Through,” there is supposedly backmasking, however, I do not believe it is intentional or even there. The only way one would assume that it says this is if they are told what it is supposed to say first.
5. In “I’m So Tired,” I do not believe the Beatles used backmasking at all. Forwards and backwards, the song just sounds like nothing but gibberish.
6. “Another One Bites the Dust” does sound like it has backmasked lyrics, but only if the supposed lyrics are shown. Without reading the alleged lyrics, I had no idea what it said, but once I read them, I could hear it.
7. In the Eagles’s “Hotel California,” there is another prime example of how a word with an “s” in it suddenly turns into “Satan.” The word “say” in the original lyrics is said to be “Satan” in the backmasked lyrics. I think this is completely false and that the phrase that is supposedly there does not even exist.
8. In Pink Floyd’s “Empty Spaces,” I believe that there is definitely an example of backmasking. Playing the song forwards, there only appears to be indistinguishable sounds, which contributes to the idea that Pink Floyd did this intentionally. Clearly, when played backwards, it says, “Congratulations, you have found the hidden message.”
9. The idea that the phrase “Turn me on, dead man” is hidden purposely in the Beatles’s song, “Revolution 9,” is ridiculous to me. I do not hear it at all, and I don’t see how “Number nine,” suddenly becomes this longer phrase that doesn’t actually make any sense anyway.
10. Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” does not, in my opinion, have any backmasking hidden within it. I believe that the Satanic worshipping phrase that is supposedly hidden in the line played backwards is made up from someone’s imagination.

1. Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin
I think that backmasking was used in this song. It was a song that I could partially here backmasking in before I read the reverse lyrics. The phrase is very specific and fairly long for backmasking. It seems that there has to be some backmasking in this song.
2.…Baby One More Time Brittney Spears
I can not tell if this song is backmasking or not. It seems very clear to me when I play the lyrics in reverse that the song says “sleep with me I’m not too young”. On the other hand, it does not seem practical for Spears to backmask that into one of her songs. I would lean more towards it is backmasking, although I do not understand the purpose of it in this case.
3. My Name Is… Eminem
I do not think backmasking is in this song. Listening to it in reverse, it does not seem clear enough. The lyrics are said to say “It is Slim. It’s Eminem” but to me the words are too slurred together. I don’t even hear “Slim”, or at least not the “S”.
4. Another One Bites the Dust
I do think there is backmasking in this song. Without looking at the reverse lyrics, I could hear what they said; “it’s fun to smoke marijuana”. The words are very clear, and pronounced. It seems like a case of backmasking to me.
5. Paparazzi Lady Gaga
I do not think there is backmasking in this song. When listening to the reverse song without knowing the lyrics I heard nothing but a song played in reverse. When I looked at the lyrics and listened to the song, I heard some of the supposed backmasking, but not all of it. I think it was just over-analyzed, and there is no backmasking.
6. Work It Missy Elliot
I do think there is backmasking in this song. She is pretty much telling you to reverse the song in the lyrics. Then. When you reverse the song it says the same thing backwards. It seems very intentional.
7. This Life I Lead Tupac Shakur
I don’t think there is back masking in this song. I can here the “yes I’m alive and I’m missing you”, but I think it’s just a coincidence. I don’t see the point of him putting it in the song, at that point. Obviously he is dead now, and maybe he knew he was going to die, but I think that’s unlikely.
8. Imagine John Lennon
I do not think this song contains backmasking. When listening to the reverse lyrics, without knowing what they say, I hear nothing. When I looked at the lyrics I still really did hear anything. It is suppose to say “The people war beside me”. That doesn’t even make much sense, so why would you bother backmasking it.
9. Beat It Michael Jackson
This is not backmasking. I didn’t hear the “backmasking” listening to it without looking at the lyrics, and the same looking at the lyrics. It just sounded like a song played in reverse. The words were slurred together, and I don’t think there was anything to find.
10. Kiss, Kiss, Kiss Yoko Ono
I don’t think this is backmasking. I feel like people got way too into John Lennon being supposedly “dead” from all these “clues”. I could hear the “I shot John Lennon” after I looked at what it was suppose to say and played it about ten times. But I think at that point my brain was probably helping with that. I defiantly do not think this is backmasking.

In general, I think backmasking does exist. There are some songs where is seems very clear that there is something said in reverse. On the other hand, I think people, at points, get too enthralled in finding backmasking. This results in accusations of backmasking that really are not there. Backmasking does exist, just not as much as people presume.

1) Stairway to Heaven: This song is tricky because the supposed backmasking is so extensive. While some of it sounds very clear, there are other parts of it that definitely sound like they’re reaching.
2) My Name Is...: This one sounds a little bit more clear than some of the other ones. It would also be an interesting addition to the song because the backmasking would be answering the question posed by the lyrics as its being asked.
3) Pokemon Rap: This one definitely isn’t backmasking; it literally sounds like nothing when played backwards.
4) ...Baby One More Time: This example is fairly clear and can be deciphered without looking at the posed lyrics. Therefore, I think it was done intentionally.
5) Another One Bites the Dust: This song definitely contains backmasking: the words “it’s fun to smoke marijuana” can clearly be heard when played in reverse, and the drug was extremely popular in those days, so it seems logical that a band as big as Queen could include a backmasked reference to it.
6) Nature Trail to Hell: This song is obviously intentional because the lyrics are indistinguishable when played forward but are perfectly clear when played backwards.
7) Hotel California: This example is definitely just a coincidence because the only reversed word you can really hear is “Satan” and the rest is complete gibberish.
8) Fire on High: This is another obvious example of reversed speech simply being placed in the song with no regard to what it sounds like when played forward. Also a very creepy example.
9) Break on Through: Although this example is fairly clear and Jim Morrison was a bit of a freak, it’s such a short line that it could just be a coincidence.
10) Beat It: This one is definitely not backmasking because when played in reverse it’s just a jumble of sounds.

1. In Led Zeppelin’s song “Stairway to Heaven” there is an example of reverse speech in the part about a bustle in your hedgerow. People claim it mentions Satan and is intentional by the band.
2. In “Paparazzi” by Lady Gaga, in the chorus part when she sings “There’s no other superstar…”, if played backwards it sounds vaguely like she says “…we model it on the arts of Lucifer”. This is an example of reverse speech.
3. In “300 MHz” by At the Drive-In, The lyrics sung the first half of the song are reversed and played over the second half of the song. This is an example of backmasking.
4. In “Eunuch Provocateur” by The Mars Volta, the band had found records of children’s nursery rhymes and they put a reversed recording of “Itsy Bitsy Spider” as well as other pieces from this record on this song as an example of backmasking.
5. In Eminem’s song “My Name is…” there seems to be an intentional example of reverse speech, he says “my name is... Slim Shady…”, and reversed it sounds like “It is Slim. It’s Eminem”.
6. In Britney Spears’ song there is a questionable example of reverse speech in which it sounds like she says “Sleep with me, I am not too young.
7. “Break on through” by The Doors has a good example of reverse speech. When Jim Morrison sings “Treasures here”, backwards it sounds quite a bit like “I am Satan”.
8. “Fire on High” by Electric Light Orchestra has, in my oppinon, a kind of cheesy example of backmasking. In which they recorded someone saying “The music is reversible but time I not… turn back…”.
9. In The Beatles song “Revolution 9” there are examples of backmasking and reverse speech throughout the song. When it says “Number 9…” over and over it sounds like “Turn me on dead man”. There are also examples of reverse speech where they discuss Paul McCartney being dead.
10. In “Beat it” by Michael Jackson it feels like a stretch that he actually wanted to say “I believe it was Satan in me”.

The songs I chose were "Beat It" by MJ, "My Name Is.." by Eminem, "Fire on High" by ELO, "...Baby One More Time" by Britney Spears, "Empty Spaces" by Pink Floyd, "Another One Bits the Dust" by Queen, "Imagine" by John Lennon, "I'm So Tired" by The Beatles, "Paparazzi" by Lady GaGa and "Nature Trail to Hell" by Weird Al. the supposed reversed speech in "Beat It" is completely indistinguishable if you don't know what you're listening for, so I thought that was a load of crap. "My Name Is.." was obviously backmasking, so clearly articulated that it had to be done on purpose. "Fire on High" was disturbing forwards and back, but because it was inaudible forwards, I want to say the lyricism was designed for the clearly audible reverse message, which was so clear as to suggest the artist may have actually done the backmasking running forwards. "....Baby One More" was definitely done on purpose - backmasking. "Empty Spaces was also backmasking done on purpose - gotta love a band with a good sense of humor. I was really impressed by "Another One Bites the Dust", because if you study the lyrics and try to say them backward (another one/marijuana for example), you can tell the backwards message was probably put in there intentionally through clever lyricism. I'm not sure if I believe the speech reversal theory, but this song is also a compelling piece of evidence for that. I think "Imagine" was unintentional, though it could go along with the unconscious speech reversal theory because of the fact that the message was talking about stuff that was definitely on Lennon's mind at the time the song was written. I think "I'm So Tired" was done on purpose, possibly the band was fun with all the rumors flying around. The message in "Paparazzi" was another load of crap. Not clear enough to even be considered. As for "Nature Trail to Hell" considering the song is a parody of "Stairway to Heaven" which is somewhat famous for its supposed speech reversal references to Satan, I'd say the Cheez Whiz was definitely intentional backmasking.

NOTE: I listed five examples and refuse to list more, because it would be completely repetitive if I did so.

Backmasking is hiding messages in a song by playing them backwards. It is deliberate. Reverse speech is the theory that when played backwards, human speech will have a hidden meaning. This is not deliberate or necessarily factual.
In Yoko Ono’s “Kiss, Kiss, Kiss,” the lyrics “anata daiteyo,” when played backwards, supposedly sound like “I shot John Lennon.” In my opinion, this is a stretch and coincidence—something you could only find if you were listening for it. In “Stairway to Heaven,” supposedly the word “Satan” and related words appear several times, but I think that this is an exaggeration, most likely by someone who had a problem with the music for some other reason (and too much free time on their hands). I can’t hear the message until I look at the lyrics, and even then it’s a little bit of a reach. To me, it sounds like scrambled speech, with no hidden messages, which is what it is. Some songs, like Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi,” sound a bit closer, but obviously this is a coincidence, because how could you possibly knowingly hide that in your song by singing lyrics forwards? Some are even more ridiculous; for example, the Pokémon rap. This is a kids’ song, and the “I love Satan” it’s supposed to be saying backwards is simply ridiculous. Another example is Michael Jackson’s “Beat It,” which supposedly says “I believe it was Satan in me.” I don’t think it sounds like that at all.
In summary, reverse speech is an interesting theory, but nothing more. There seems to be no basis in reality to this idea. Backmasking is even more interesting, but not so much that I’m going to go play all of my favorite songs backwards.

Sorry this is so late... I forgot.

ACDC- Beating Around the Bush
line- “Beating around the bush”
interpretation- "I shoved the knife in him"

I can hardly hear this one. The person who came up with the idea that this “message” was imbedded in the lyrics must have had a very creative imagination.

Jimi Hendrix- Fire
line- “Let me stand next to your fire”
interpretation- "I offer you some acid, man."

I think this is a stretch, if Hendrix wanted to incorporate some kind of subliminal message he would have been more strategic.

Pink Floyd- Empty Spaces
line- *Creepy voices.
interpretation- "Congratulations. You've just discovered the secret message. Please send your answer to Old Pink, care of the Funny Farm, Chalfont... Roger! Carolyn's on the phone!"

This example of backmasking scares me because it shows that some of the messages could have been intentional.

Queen- Another One Bites the Dust
line- “Another one bites the dust”
interpretation- "It's fun to smoke marijuana"

Although, still a little unclear, this example is a bit more recognizable. I would still not be able to hear it if it hadn’t been brought to my attention.

Led Zepplin- Stairway to Heaven
line- “Yes, there are two paths you can go by; But in the long run; There's still time to change; The road you're on”
interpretation- "Glory glory to my sweet satan, there was a little child born, it makes me sad, whose power is satan"

This message appears very clear. Some of the words are an exact match to the real English. Again, I don’t think I could come up with this conclusion on my own.

John Lennon- Imagine
line- “Imagine all the people”
interpretation- "Leave her warm beside me"

No, I don’t think the message interpreted from these lyrics is accurate at all. I don’t see how this could have been portrayed as English at all.

Eagles- Hotel California
line- “And I was thinking to myself; This could be heaven or this could be hell; Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way; There were voices down the corridor; I thought I heard them say...”
interpretation- "Yeah satan, oh he came, and organized his own religion. Yeah when he knowns he shouldn't..."

This line seems kind of more realistic, yet I am still unconvinced.

Cheap Trick- Gonna Raise Hell
line- “I never lose; To me it’s no mystery”
interpretation- "Satan holds the key to the lock."

Well, this is somewhat believable, still I personally believe it to be hogwash.

Rolling Stones- Tops
line- “Behind your tasting of the sweet wine of success”
interpretation- "I love you, said the Devil."

I don’t think the “message” perceived by the person who uncovered it correlates with the lyrics at all. Again, fantastic imagination.

Beatles- Smells Like Teen Spirit
line- “Ah, yes, But it’s all wrong”
interpretation- “I worship satan”

This line is so short I think the interpretation was a bit of a force.

I believe that the backmasking in some songs are believable because they go with facts about the band or artist. But for most of the backmasking in the songs it all had to do with Satan or was completely random. I think people dont actually hear it at first until they find out what it actually says and then thats all they hear.

The song “Nature Trail to Hell” by Weird Al is a perfect example of back masking. This is true because the forward of the song is simply the reverse. This makes the forward indistinguishable and the reverse clear and defined. The reason for this is probably just something new to do. Weird Al is an artist that makes many songs that are funny and comical for his listeners.

In the song “I’m So Tired” by The Beatles, there is a clear cut example of back masking. The lyrics say “Paul is a dead man. Miss him, miss him, miss him.” The lyrics are talking about Paul McCartney who had supposedly died. The Beatles are saying that Paul had died and they miss him and he will always be missed. The crazy thing about this back masking is that Paul never actually died. This is why this song is an example of back masking rather than coincidence.

John Lennon’s song “Imagine” is simply a coincidence rather than back masking. This is because the lyrics are not clear and don’t seem to sound purposeful to me. What I mean by this is that the forward of the song says “Imagine all the people.”, and the reverse of the song supposedly says “the people war beside me”. The reverse of the song does not make sense to me because the words really don’t have any meaning. This is an example of accidental words formed on the reverse, which happens all the time.

Ashlie Sprague said...

Pink Floyd’s song “Empty Spaces” is also another clear example of back masking. This is because the forward of the song is also gibberish. The reverse of the song sends a message that they purposely made the song so that the listeners would have to listen to the song in reverse. This reverse of the song says “You just discovered the secret message. Please send your answer to old pink, care of the funny farm, Chalfont.” These lyrics clearly state that the reverse of the song was in fact a message, showing that this song is an example of back masking.

The song “Beat It” by Michael Jackson is not an example of back masking, it is just a coincidence. I think this song is just coincidence because the words in reverse do not have any special meaning. Not only do they not have meaning but they are also jumbled together and you can barely recognize the words. This is the main reason why I think this song is just simply coincidence and not back masking.

The song “My Name Is’ by Eminem is an example of back masking because the way the words are formed and what is said. Eminem says pretty much the same thing both forward and reversed. In the reverse he adds that he is Eminem. This shows that there was purpose to the way the words were set up in the forward so that the reverse would form a certain message. This is an example of back masking.

The song “Kiss, Kiss, Kiss” by Yoko Ono is not an example of back masking just another example of coincidence. When you play the reverse of the song the supposed lyrics “I shot John Lennon” are unclear and can barely be heard. This shows that there was no intention for these words. People have simply formed the thought that there was a hidden message in the song when in reality this is simply coincidence. Therefore this is not an example of back masking.

Ashlie Sprague said...

The song “Fire on High” is another example of back masking. This song is by ELO and they had every intention of producing a song with back masking. The song played forward is just a mess of sounds so that the reverse of the song will be a clear message. This shows that the song is an example of back masking. This whole line is played in reverse which means that they want their listeners to listen to the song in reverse to hear the message, or the lyrics created.

Led Zeppelin’s song stairway to Heaven is an example of back masking. The reverse of the lyrics shows that the song actually has a reverse message. The reverse of the song talks about Satan and the tool shed that Satan made them suffer in. Ironically the song is Stairway to Heaven which is the opposite of Hell. The song has mixed messages because the forward version is talking about Heaven and the reverse version is talking about Hell.

One of the Spice Girls songs says “was I easy have fun”. This is not an example of back masking, it is simple coincidence. In my opinion there was no intentional hidden message. This means that sometimes the forward words can form other words when played in reverse. The reason I don’t think this is back masking is because the message that was sent in reverse is talking about the Spice Girls in a negative way. The other reason I think this was just coincidence is because the words are not clear.

The song “Thank You” by Alanis Morissette is also an example of coincidence. Some people this that she is really saying “high in LA”. The main reason why I think this is not an example of back masking is because the way the words “high in LA” sound in the song. They sound more accidental and coincidental than anything. Also, the words don’t really have any significance and they are jumbled together rather than pronounced clearly. This shows that there was not meaning to the words and they just happened to sounds that way when they played in reverse.

Backmasking is when you play a song backwards. And people discovered this and started doing it years ago. Some songs have hidden messages while others might just be a coincidence.
One song I listened to backwards was stairway to heaven. It was a huge paragraph that was played backwards so I think they meant to say things about satan backwards.
Another one was the Britney Spears song "Baby one more time". I have talked to some people about this one and they think she said it the reverse way first then thought it sounded bad. Yet, when she played it backwards it said "with you I lose my mind" and she decided to keep it that way. Thus, I think she meant to
have that one.
The song "beat it" by Michael Jackson says "tell you its fair" then backwards it says "I believe it was satan in me" If you really listen its not too hard to figure out what hes saying but it is a little difficult. I personally do not think he meant for that one to happen.
The song "Another one bites the dust" says that repeatedly in the chorus. Backwards it says "It's fun to smoke marijuna." I think because it is a very long chorus of just that I think he meant that one. Plus, you could hear it clearly.
The song "Kiss Kiss Kiss" by Yoko Ono says "Anata Daiteyo." Backwards though it says " I shot John Lennon" This is ironic because that was her husband and he was assassinated. I honestly do not think she meant for that to happen because she loved him and I don't think she would want to say that.
"Revolution 9" by the Beatles repeatedly says "Number 9." Backwards it says, "Turn me on dead man." I think they meant this because there was a whole conspiracy with Paul McCartney being dead and they wanted to go along with it. Also, it was a long paragraph so they must have known and you can hear it clearly.
The Doors song "Break on through" says, "Treasure's there." Backwards it says "I am satan" I think they meant to do this. Even though its a short line you can hear it pretty clearly.
"Nature tail to hell" by Weird Al is very hard to hear the words forward so you can't make out what he's saying. Backwards it says, "Satan eats cheese whiz." I think he meant to do this because Weird Al would do something like that. Plus, it is pretty clear.
The song "My name is" by Eminem is just the chorus. Backwards it says, "It's Slim, It's Eminem" and keeps repeating it. I think he meant for that to happen because it is too much of a coincedence.
In John Lennon's song "Imagine" he says, "Imagine all the people." Then, backwards he says, "The people war beside me." I think he did not mean for this because it doesn't make much sense. Also, he didn't like war.
I got all of these from Jeff Milner's site. I based on if I thought they meant to put it there based on how clearly you can hear them say the words backwards.

Rammstein's "Sonne" in English means Sun. I don't quite understand why he says here comes the sonne in English and everything else is in German. I also find it weird that he counts from one to ten in German constantly in chorus.

Rammstein's "Du Hast" in English means "You Are..."
He keeps saying du hast micht fragt doin, du hast micht gott. Basically this line is backwards in itself. So this line of chorus per say means you are doing a lot of questioning, so you are much of god.

Paramore's "Misery Business" I want you but I don't love you.

1) In Britney Spears's song "Baby One More Time" when the chorus is played backwards it is said you can hear her say "Sleep with me I'm not too young". Though this is humorous when you place it upon the stigma of her personality now, and the backmasking is much more clear than other "reversed" songs, it still seems a little too far stretched to me.

2) In ELO's song "Fire on High" there is a garble on unintelliglible nonsense, but when it is played backwards there is a very evident message within the noise. When played backwards you can hear "The music is reversible, but time is not. Turn back! Turn back! Turn back!". This is an obviously intentional (and extremely eerie) backmasking.

3) Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" is the most known backmasking, and the most notorious "Satan worship" song. When played backwards the song is "supposedly" full of Satan worship propoganda. This is completely inaudible unless you are actually looking at the words you are supposed to be hearing, and even then it's not Satan worship as everyone claims! The backwards nonsense is something that could only be taken as them talking about Satan torturing sinners! Here is the mentioned backmasked message, “Oh here’s to my sweet Satan./The one whose little path would make me sad, whose power is Satan./He will give those with him six six six./There was a little tool shed where he made us suffer, sad Satan”. This one is obviously hogwash.

4) Pink Floyd is also known for doing intentional backmasking. In their song "Empty Spaces" they left a message for those people who enjoy turning songs backwards looking for something else within songs. The message left behind is "Hello, hunters. Congratulations. You've just discovered the secret message. Please send your answer to Old Pink, care of the funny farm, Chalfont." (voice in background) "Roger! Carolyne is on the phone!". I find this one funny because it also pokes fun at these "hunters", saying that they belong in the "funny farm" a euphenism for an insane asylum.

5) Soundgarden also left behind a message, this one actually making fun of people who are looking specifically for Satanic messages within music. "Santa, I love you baby. My Christmas king. Santa, you’re my king. I love you, Santa baby. Got what I need" is found in the song 665. Santa, the pronounciation being extremely close to Satan, is there to fool people into believing they've found a Satanic message, until they hear it fully.

6) It is said when you play The Beatles's song "Revolution 9" you can hear them saying "Turn me on dead man" over and over again. This is directly connected to the Paul is dead conspiracy theory and, to me, is complete hogwash.

7) Another one I find completely ridiculous is Yoko Ono's song "Kiss Kiss Kiss" played backwards says "I shot John Lennon" and though if it were true I would believe it instantly, the backmasking is obviously hogwash.

8) In Weird Al's song "Nature Trail to Hell" it is intentionally backmasked "Satan loves Chez Whiz" which I find completely hilarious and one hundred percent intential.

9) In the backwards solo in the White Stripes song "Walk With a Ghost" "get out of my mind" can be heard. I find this one to also be completely intentional.

10) Another intentional backmasking is in the Tenacious D song "Karate" where the singer says "eat donkey crap", again I find this completely hilarious.
