Writing and Visual Imagination: Choosing a Concept

Choosing a concept for your semester-long Concept-folio can be dificult and is certainly challenging. Let's use this post to declare "working concepts", or initial ideas. Post your possible concepts by 9-21 and offer an explanation for your focus. After you post your concept and offer an explanation, be sure to view your classmates' concepts. Offer commendations or criticism and don't be shy. After all, wouldn't you rather reformulate your concept now as opposed to in November? And remember- your concept should transcend disciplines; it must be applicable to:

-visual references: at least 10 color copies of images which exemplify the chosen concept; a list of at least 20 additional images which exemplify the chosen concept- every work of art must be cited with artist, title, date, country of origin, and medium

-3 student-authored critiques of 3 of the chosen color images which display mastery of the visual vocabulary terms addressed in this course; 2 samples of existing criticism, critique, review, or biographical information regarding the other 2 chosen color images

-5 student-authored narratives based upon 5 relevant color images which display a comprehensive understanding of the grammar and sentence pattern techniques addressed in this course

-2 student-authored examinations, with quotes and/or excerpts, of the 2 remaining color images which analyze the works of art in relation to the philosophical viewpoints presented in Plato’s Republic and Leo Tolstoy’s What is Art?

-at least 5 excerpts from literature, poetry, or non-fiction which support or reflect the chosen concept- every excerpt must be cited with author, title, date, and country of origin; a list of at least 20 additional pieces of literature, poetry, or non-fiction which support the chosen concept

-list of at least 10 websites or links which contain highly relevant information regarding the chosen concept

-evidence (photos, journal entries, etc.) of interaction with the community based on the spirit of the concept; for example, a concept-folio entitled “Perceptions of Beauty” may elicit a community-wide visual survey and a concept-folio entitled “Nature and the Arts” may elicit the promotion of a landscape painting excursion to the Norton Conservation on North Worcester Street

-2 page typed reflection outlining the concept-folio conception, process and results (FINAL EXAM IN-CLASS COMPONENT)

-color copy/copies/original of student artwork inspired by the chosen concept

-other additions may include: list of musical references, music, performance, web publication of concept folio with links, power point presentation of concept folio

The bottom line is: choose a concept that interests YOU. If you do, you won't even notice that you are working; if you don't, it will be a long semester.

My idea for my concept folio is Materialism

So basically my concept is the god of concepts and describes me in full detail. My concept IS me. Its called "Indie" which is the short memorable title when the longer meaning of the title is "The artistic views of indepent minds". Through this concept i will be describing artists such as Damien Hirst who is known for outlandish sculptures and paintings. Ben Gibbard who is the lead singer and lyrical genius behind such bands as, The Postal Service and Death Cab For Cutie, and many many more. So tell me what you all think of my concept.

I saw a folio that was pink and it reminded me of the trashy BURN BOOK from the classic film Mean Girls. So I was inspired to do a concept dealing with high school cliques and stereotypes, the dynamics of adolescent behavior. Any ideas for sources for images? I got top model and some movie ideas but... Does anyone have any good songs in mind?

I have been thinking of many different concepts for my "conceptfolio." One of the ideas that I keep referring back to is the concept of "faith and religion." When I think of this concept, I see many ancient Roman paintings and many paintings from the Italian Renaissance. One of my favorite painters, like Michael Angelo, come from the Renaissance, and many of their paintings have to do with faith and religion. Another concept that I have been focusing on is "humor". I feel as if it is a general concept and everyone can find something humorous in some form of art; it is an individual decision.

I am going to base my concept around the haze, chaos, and horror of war. Many great pieces of art have been done on the subject, including photography, paintings and drawings. I hope to explore these pieces to get a real understanding of war and its participants.

I don't quite understand the focal point of your concept, Cam. Will you be comparing the art of Damien Hirst and Ben Gibbard? Or are you using this as a forum to talk about yourself (What else is new? Kidding!)?

Aliya,
I think that there are plenty of different pieces of art on all of those subjects, and they would all make great concept folios. However, the strongest of the 3, for me at least, is pain.

My title for my concept folio is Companionship. I want to explore where people find companionship. I chose companionship as opposed to friendship or love becasue I believe companionship is open to interpretation. Do you find companionship in a friend, a family member, a pet, a boyfrined/girlfriend? I think I can find a lot of different paintings and stories that deal with some form of companionship. Let me know if you can think of any.

I like the idea of self-image and like self-perception. That could be really cool. If i think of any good ideas I'll definitely tell you. I think pain and heartbreak aren't as interesting and are more typical. Self-image could be really different and artsy.
You could maybe like deal with like mirrors, like literally and figuratively.

I feel pain would be the best topic for your concept folio. There is so much you can do from physical pain to emotional pain. For emotional pain you could do heartbreak or the pain of losing a loved one. Or even war.

My proposed concept is: The Sands of Time (time). I have thought about this for awhile and feel this is a topic that really interests me. Initially I considered paintings I like and remembered Dali’s “Moment of Explosion”. I want to incorporate the melting clocks, Big Ben, Flava Flav, shadows, time lapsed photos, and Pink Floyd in my concept folio. Also I found painting by Jennifer Bartlett on line and they are really interesting. The artist’s series entitled “Air: 24 Hours” works perfectly with my theme and is a cycle of paintings that catalogue each hour of the day with a clock hidden in each painting displaying the time of the day.

My concept folio ideas are the following:
1.The Innocence of Children
2. Growing Up
3. Childhood
--I am interested in these topics because I feel that children are opened minded and that they believe that they can do anything and that anything is possible. They are the future and somethimes they have a better outlook on life than some adults do.

For my concept-folio, I'm choosing to use fashion and combining vintage and the different time era's all into one theme. I want to get into the fashion industry when I graduate and I think that this folio would help to increase my odds of successfully entering the world of fashion. I will also be throwing in the cities around the world that are most known for Fashion such as Paris and Italy. Maybe I will even take bits of history and examine what Fashion was back then to what it is considered now. what do you think, opinions, comments, questions?

Dance is an awesom concept. Many artists paint nothing but dance, such as Edgar Degas. And many artist paint abstract paintings that show motion... my idea is go from paintings and music and describe in detail what dance means to you.

Maddie, you could like do like different types of dance and what they mean, what they represent. You could be sort of cultural with it and maybe relate it to the media and the new types of dancing. And maybe in your folio you could put a dance mix cd to listen. I love the CHA CHA SLIDE.

i didn't know art was one of your favorite things. I guess you learn a new thing everyday. I'm kidding. Okay, your portflio idea is a good one. Dancers do have many emotions while dancing, esspecially if the song being danced to has a strong message or feeling. My only concern however is that you might not be able to get a lot of stories and narratives out of them, esspecially since you can't hear the music and you only see the photograph. Just something to think about. Other than that great job!

Brandon Bessette,
When trying to come up with a portfolio concept idea ask yourself this...What am I interested in or feel strongly about? This way you will enjoy working on your portfolio and it won't be too difficult to do if you enjoy the topic you pick. Are you interested in any sports? A certain type of music? Maybe you could try to tie the two together. Good luck! I hope you can find something you like.
