#1 Robert Johnson claimed to have sold his soul to the devil in exchange for musical genius. This took place in Mississippi in a dinner. Since the claim, it has been one of the biggest tourist areas for blues related travels. Causing a controversy certainly helped him gain publicity which could be attributed to his popularity as a blues musician.
#2 Ozzy Osborne has been known to do illegal drugs, and be an alcoholic throughout his life. He has been none to bight of the heads of small animals in a live performance. He decided to use doves at a concert for a sign of peace, however he was intoxicated so he bit off the head of one of the doves. At another performance in Iowa, a woman threw a bat on the stage which was said to be dead. Ozzy thought it was rubber so he bites the head off of the bad, which was in fact real. Ever since the incidents he has been known, and remembered for biting of the heads of these animals.
#3 The Abbey Road is the eleventh album created by the Beatles which was their last. The group was not cooperating and had differences with each other and decided to push all of that away and “go out on a high note”. This Album is considered one of their greatest albums. It was named/ rated number fourteenth on the list “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time”. The cover is the members of the band and a look alike of Paul. Paul died from a car crash, and so the rest of the band got a look alike Paul to play his role in the picture. Paul is wearing no shoes .Crossing the road, John is dressed like a priest; the Paul-lookalike- a dead guy, and George- a grave digger.
#4 Bob Dylan decided to switch from acoustic to electric guitar on the stage of the Newport musical festival in July 1965. He played 2 songs and was booed off the stage. He then went back out and played 2 more songs after he was booed and then walked off to a cheering crowd. He did not return to the Newport film festival for 37 years
#5 Puff the magic dragon was actually written about marijuana. Through the use of metaphors one is able to connect the dots between a “magic dragon” and a conventional marijuana cigarette. This is now used as a kids song and to their unstained minds have no deeper meaning other than an awesome dragon.
#6 Sigmund Freud- came up with most new psychological theories
Marylyn Monroe- famous actress
Bob Dylan- very famous song writer, had a terrible voice
Oscar Wilde- notorious play writer
Sonny Liston- very famous boxer and at one point champion of the world

After performing as a solely acoustic artist for years, Bob Dylan switched to electric on his 5th album. He was backed up by a whole band of musicians, instead of just him. This switch was not received well, especially by his fans who had been attracted to his simple style of an acoustic guitar and a harmonica. His concert in Newport became controversial because he performed with an electric band and guitar. The audience booed Dylan at this concert and according to different people, for different reasons. Some argued that it was just the mere sight of Dylan with and electric that upset fans, where some argued it was the poor sound quality. Some say the disapproval was directed at the short duration of Dylan’s set list. Dylan himself thought the boos were because of his electric sound. (Wikipedia)

Another music myth is that Led Zeppelin’s famous song “Stairway to Heaven” contains hidden messages. Through a method called backward masking, playing a song backwards to reveal a hidden lyric, they were accused of supporting satanic messages. When playing the song backwards the lyrics, “oh here’s to my sweet Satan/the one whose little path would make me sad, whose power is Satan/he will give those with him 666/there was a little tool shed where he made us suffer, sad Satan”. The band denied these accusations and most people don’t think anything of it. (Wikipedia)

The cover for The Beatles album “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” depicts many different people standing as if posing for a group picture. The people on the cover are the bands favorite celebrities. Among those I recognize are Bob Dylan, Edgar Allen Poe, and Marilyn Monroe. Dylan is a very influential folk artist that the Beatles most likely received inspiration from. Edgar Allen Poe is a poet who is famous for his dark stories and poems. His writing was possibly inspirational to the Beatles song writing. Marilyn Monroe was a famous actress, singer, and model at the time. Someone who I didn’t recognize was former Beatle, Stuart Sutcliffe. I had no knowledge of any former Beatles other than Pete Best. I knew of Karl Marx, the creator of communism, but in the cover I did not recognize him. Also, the singer Dion is on the cover. I had never heard of this artist, but he was a popular artist before the Beatles and the British invasion of Rock and Roll. (Wikipedia)

Bob Dylan Goes Electric:
For the first time on July 25, 1965, Bob Dylan plugged in an electric guitar at the Newport Folk Festival in an attempt to “rock” the crowd. Quite contrary to what he expected, instead of pleasing the crowd, Dylan was ‘booed’ off the stage. According to one source, Dylan left the stage in tears. Then, after returning to the stage, “he discovered he did not have the right harmonica”, and the audience threw multiples onto the stage in attempt to lighten the mood. After this traumatizing incident, Dylan didn’t return to the Newport Folk Festival for another 37 years!

Peter, Paul and Mary's 1965 hit "Puff, The Magic Dragon" is about smoking marijuana.
According to some critics, the hit song Puff the Magic Dragon made famous by Peter, Paul and Mary was actually about smoking marijuana. This theory came to be as a result of the song being written in the 1960’s- which was a prime time for hippies, who became associated throughout the years with weed and psychedelic drugs. The person in the song referred to as “Jackie Paper” can be associated with rolling papers, and the “magic dragon” can be associated with marijuana itself because it causes a ‘magical’ feeling when “puff[ed]”.

The first face on the cover that I recognized was Paul McCartney. This was obviously because McCartney is well known to be one of the founding fathers of the Beatles. Marilyn Monroe is also another famous face that I recognized on the cover of this album. Bob Dylan and Edgar Allan Poe are also two other faces that are familiar to me. Dylan and Poe, like the Beatles, were writers, while Dylan was both a writer and a singer just like the Beatles.
Some unfamiliar faces on the cover would be those of: Tommy Handley, Terry Southern, and the Varga Girl. Tommy Handley was a comedian that became a professional singer later on down his life, so that is most likely why he is on the cover. Terry Southern was a writer who specialized in comedy, and spent a lot of time in London which is where the Beatles came from. Finally, the Varga Girl was created by Alberto Vargas. This was his way of creating the perfect girl, which was an wonderful idea to the Beatles.

4.) In 1965 there was a Newport Folk Festival, at which Bob Dylan decided to change things up with his set. This was a folk concert so not many folks would expect listening to the electric guitar. Many were shocked with newly crafted band that Bob Dylan put together. Most of the crowd was already booing after the first song. Later Bob Dylan gave the crowd the music they wanted, by putting the electric guitar away and taking out the acoustic guitar. Many remembered Bob Dylan because of this unexpected surprise.
5.) Many question the true meaning behind the song “American Pie” by Don McLean. Many say that the tone is supposed to be about the 1959 crash that killed Holly, Valens, and J.P. However the photos and reports of the crash prove no plane that is named “American Pie”. Later on McLean had to admit that it was indeed a myth. He said “it is untrue. I created the term.”
6.) I am familiar with Edgar Allan Poe, Marylyn Monroe and Bob Dylan. I am unfamiliar with Sonny Liston, Tom Mix, and Robert Peel. I know that Edgar Allan Poe is a very well-known poet that has written many poems that have become very famouse. Marylyn Monroe was said to be absolutely perfect by many people. She was a famous supermodel/superstar, that is still very known today. And lastly Bob Dylan is a famous acoustic guitarist that is known more by older folk people.

Part two

On July 25, 1965 Dylan performed at the Newport Folk Festival. The audience was full of students and professors studying rather than experiencing the great music that these artists were performing. Bob Dylan got attention really quick because of the hit he made in 1963 “Blowin’ in the Wind”. This song got him really famous. So when Dylan when on stage the first song he performed was “Maggie’s Farm”. He played this song on an electric guitar and parts of the crowd were surprised. Dylan was booed by a section of the audience. While the crowd was still booing at him he played two more songs, “Like a Rolling Stone” and “Phantom Engineer”. Dylan said “Let’s go man, that’s all” and walked off stage as the crowd was still booing him, some clapping. Dylan then came back on stage and performed two more songs, but by himself. He preformed “It’s all over now, Baby Blue” and “Mr. Tambourine Man”. The crowd was still shocked and silent during these two songs, but then after they started to cheer for him. http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyle/Features/spotlight-0725/
Eminem released his sixth album on May 15, 2009. His album was called relapse. He named his album this because he was addicted to lots of drugs and had to go to rehab for it. He went to rehab and then once he got out he relapsed. So then he made this album. Eminem was addicted to sleep medications and he claims that he was an hour away from death. That is when he admitted he had this problem. The album came out and it was a pretty good one, but not his best. Eminem has now been sober for a really long time. He has been sober for over a year now. (my Head)

In this Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band there are many people that I do not recognize and there are also some people that I do recognize. One person that I recognize is Karl Marx. The only reason I recognize this person is because I had to do a project on him last year for Sociology. I also recognize Bob Dylan. I know this guy because my dad is in love with him and also he is your (mr. Kefor) favorite artist. I also recognize John Lennon because come on who doesn’t know who that is. He is in the Beatles! There are also lots of people I don’t know in this picture. I don’t know who Wallace Berman is. I guess he is an artist. I got to look in to him more, maybe he is good. I also never heard of Sonny Liston. He is a boxer though. This could be bad that I don’t know who he is, but hey nothing I can do. Also I don’t recognize Diana Dors. This girl is an actress. These are 3 people o recognize and don’t recognize in this picture.

Myth/Legend #4:

On July 25, 1965 Bob Dylan began to play “Maggie’s Farm” on his electric guitar. While he was playing the crowd was so shocked that they started to boo him. They still booed him when he continued to play on the electric guitar. When he came back on stage singing “Mr. Tambourine man” the crowed started to cheer for him. His fans think he betrayed him by turning to the tock side of music.

Myth/Legend #5:

The singer Bobby McFerrin is still alive according to rumors saying that he committed suicide. Rumors often said that he may have shot himself in the head. This is ironic because he was the song writer of the song “don’t worry, be happy” Bobby McFerrin is still with us and often performs as a solo artist.

Myth/Legend #6:

I am familiar with Edgar Allan Poe, Marylyn Monroe and Bob Dylan. I am unfamiliar with Sonny Liston, Tom Mix, and William Seward Burroughs. Edgar Allen Poe was an American author, poet, editor and literary critic, considered part of the American Romantic Movement. Marylyn Monroe was an American actress, singer, model and showgirl who became a major sex symbol, starring in a number of commercially successful motion pictures during the 1950s and Bob Dylan is an American singer-songwriter, musician, poet and painter. He has been a major and profoundly influential figure in popular music and culture for five decades

During the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, the annual even that had given him his first real national exposure one year earlier, Bob Dylan went electric at the Newport Folk Festival, performing a rock-and-roll set publicly for the very first time while a chorus of shouts and boos rained down on him from a dismayed audience. In his 2004 memoir, Chronicles: Volume One, Dylan would write about how he failed to sense the ominous forebodings in the introduction he received. One year later, he would learn just how possessive the Newport audiences felt toward him. No one, including the audience and festival organizers, knew what they were in for. Although some sources say that the booing from the crowd was due to the horrible sound quality, many will credit it to the feelings of dismay and betrayal. Reflecting on Ronnie Gilbert's "Take him, he's yours" comment, Dylan wrote, "What a crazy thing to say! Screw that. As far as I knew, I didn't belong to anybody then or now." Though the audience felt betrayed, it is up to the artist to decide which direction to take.
The myth behind Jim Morrison is that instead of his body, another lays in his grave in Paris, and that he is still alive. The official cause of Morrison’s death in 1971 was listed as a heart attack which was believed by many to have been drug related. A man has even produced a video that he claims is Morrison living the life of a cowboy in the Pacific Northwest. People who have seen the video say the man in it bears no resemblance whatsoever to Morrison and other than the fact that many of his song lyrics had mystical themes, there is no evidence to suggest that his death was faked.
Of the many people on the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, names of which I recognize are Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Edgar Allen Poe. Bob Dylan, one of the best song writers of all time, is a folk artist from the 60’s. He had many amazing historical songs such as “Blowin’ in the Wind.” John Lennon, another artist created from this time period, was one of the Beatles. After their break up, John Lennon created many of his own songs such as “Imagine.” Edgar Allen Poe was a dark poet from the 80’s born in Boston, MA. Many of his poems, such as “Raven,” are part of the English curriculum of United States’ schools. The people I am ignorant of include Tommy Handley, David Livingstone, and Lenny Bruce. Tommy Handley was a comedian from the 40’s who was very secretive and private. He appeared on such as the BBC programs. David Livingstone was an explorer and missionary from the 1830’s. He explored many areas, most significantly exploring Africa, including such countries as Zambia. Lenny Bruce was a comedian from the 50’s and 60’s born in New York. He was a high school dropout and WWII veteran. He is known for stretching the boundaries of comedy. Virtually all of these people, although immensely successful, happened to be either lonely or private, giving more of a reason for them to be on the cover of this album.

Bob Dylan went electric for 3 songs during the 1965 Newport folk festival. Young Bob Dylan was 25 in 1965 and had performed in the 1963 and 1964 Newport folk festival. By this point in his career he had already become a well known protest folk artist. The crowd had been expecting the traditional instrumentation, guitar with a sparse backing, but Dylan had spontaneously decided to convert “Like A Rolling Stone” “Maggies Farm” and “Phantom Engineer” to rock n’ roll. The performance had mixed rock n’ roll and folk forever, but the crowd had been taken aback. They started to boo him and call him a traitor to folk music. A fellow musician/ songwriter Pete Seeger complained to the sound crew that if he had an axe he would take out the sound system just so he didn’t have to hear it anymore, which created the myth that he had an axe and had wanted to take the system out. Other performers however urged Dylan back on stage where he sang “Mr. Tambourine Man” and “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue”, the crowd applauded happily after Dylan had performed the last two songs. After the performance Dylan did return to the Newport Folk Festival for 37 years.
In Sgt. Pepper the figures that I recognized were H.G. Wells, Lewis Carol, and Bob Dylan. The Figures that I didn’t recognize were Sonny Liston, Sigmund Freud, and Dianna Dors. When the figure of H.G. Wells came onto the screen the first thing that came to mind was the war of the Worlds. H.G. Wells was born on September 21st 1866, to a family of 6, including 4 older brothers and a mother and father. In his Life Wells wrote a good deal of books and short stories. Lewis Carol brought to mind his book Alice in Wonderland when his name came across the screen. Carol Was born on January 27th 1832.

Robert Johnson is believed to have made a deal with the devil. He went out to the crossroads and met the devil. The devil gave him the ability to play the guitar and invent the blues in return for his soul. He played blues guitar in the late thirties, becoming a legend and according to many the best guitar player ever. Johnson died at 27, joining the alleged 27 club. This further exemplifies the story of the deal with the devil.
Ozzy Osbourne is known for his career with Black Sabbath and his solo career, making his own category of music. But he is also known for his drug and alcohol abuse. During one of his recording sessions, Ozzy bit the head off of one of the doves he meant to bring as a sign of peace. Also, he bit the head off of a bat thrown at him from a crowd during a concert. He thought it was rubber, but he was soon mistaken. This all leads back to his drug usage.
Paul McCartney was believed to have been killed in a car crash and replaced with a look-a-like in 1967. It is apparently through the cover of their album Abbey Road that the Beatles revealed this. The walking across the street is a funeral procession. John is dressed in white, like a preacher, Ringo is dressed in black, like a mourner, George is dressed in jeans and a shirt, like a gravedigger, and Paul is barefoot and out of step with the others, representing a dead person. The theory obviously died out.
Starting with his album Bringing it All Back Home (1965), Bob Dylan wandered into the realm of electric rock bands instead of his traditional acoustic folk. At one concert, he played with an electric band and was booed by some audience members. The distortion of his voice and guitar upset many of his die-hard folk fans. Others argue that the set was much too short and Dylan did not have enough time for himself. Dylan feels that the booing was caused by the new sound of his band that his fans were not used to.
On Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover are many people of different notoriety. Some well known individuals are Snow White, Marilyn Monroe, and Edgar Allen Poe. Snow White is the fabled girl that escaped from an evil queen into a peaceful forest of the seven dwarfs. Since Walt Disney created her, she has had a lot of recognition by many Americans. Marilyn Monroe is a famous actor of the mid twentieth century. Edgar Allen Poe is a poet who wrote dark and fearful stories and poems. He is studied in English curriculums around the world. Terry Southern, Robert Peel, and Larry Bell are relatively unknown individuals on the album cover.
Gene Simmons is known for being the bassist and vocalist of KISS but is also known for his incredibly long tongue. There is a myth that he had a cow’s tongue surgically attached to his tongue to make it so long. The technology of the day did not advocate the surgical attachment of animal parts to humans. Also, his tongue looks nothing like that of a cow’s so the argument was refuted.

Bob Dylan went electric at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. Some say that the change came when he had a run in with John Lennon. Many of Dylon’s fans opposed the artist’s choice. They said that he was “selling out”, but he was just exploring a new way to play. The rumor just puts one artist against another. No matter the time people are all trying to stir up controversy.

It has been said that Gene Simmons of KISS had a cows tongue surgically attached to his own. The surgery was supposed to help his onstage antics and performance. Though Simmons tongue is strangely long; it seems rather impossible to attach an animal body part to a human. Gene Simmons has had plastic surgery done, but nothing to do with his tongue. Also, a cow and human tongue are noticeable different.
The recognizable people are The Beatles, Bob Dylon, and Edgar Allen Poe. The rest of the members of the cover are either unknown to me, or look only vaguely familiar. There is so much myth surrounding the album that it is hard to tell what is true, and what is made up. It is rumored that McCarthy did not know about the album.
