Freshmen: Blogging 'bout the Bard

In class, we are reading Romeo and Juliet. Soon, Mr. Greene and I will introduce a major interdisciplinary Renaissance project. In preparation for this, I would like you to utilize this post as a spot to gather and share both scholarly and trivial information regarding William Shakespeare and life in general in Elizabethan England. If you discover an interesting fact, post it as a comment. Make sure to credit your source. If you find a website of particular interest, consider sharing it with the class. Also- make sure to read my inroduction below, which contains guidelines for posting. Five unique comments/and or links per student are due by 9-21.

-Shakespeare suffered the loss of his only son, Hamnet, who died in 1596 at the age of 11.
-William Shakespeare died on April 23, 1616, and was buried two days later in the chancel of Holy Trinity Church where he had been baptized exactly 52 years earlier.
-Anne Hathaway was eight years older than Shakespeare and three months pregnant when they got married!
- The only mention that Shakespeare specifically makes of his wife in his Last Will and testament was to leave her his "second best bed"
-We do not really know what Shakespeare looked like! Not one portrait was painted of Shakespeare whilst he was still alive!

Shakespeare invented the word 'assassination' and 'bump'.

Did you know that of the 17,677 words that Shakespeare uses in his plays, sonnets, and narrative poems, his is the first use of over 1,700 of them?

At Merriam-Webster's web site, they highlight a new book titled Coined by Shakespeare. This book dedicated itself to researching the words "invented" by the bard. Check out their weekly "Coinages and Curiosities."

Here is a list of some of the individual words that heretofore would not exist without the Bard:
accommodation aerial amazement
apostrophe gnarled hurry
impartial inauspicious assassination
auspicious baseless bump
castigate changeful clangor
control (noun) countless courtship
critic dexeterously dishearten
dislocate dwindle eventful
exposure fitful frugal
generous indistinguishable invulnerable
lapse laughable lonely
majestic misplaced monumental
multitudinous obscene palmy
perusal pious premeditated
radiance reliance road
sanctimonious seamy sportive
submerge

Shakespeare also added to the English language many compound words and cliches that we now cannot live (or write) without:
barefaced fancy-free green eyed
heartsick hot-blooded housekeeping
lackluster leapfrog long-haired
pitched battle clothes make the man method in his madness
to thine own self be true towering passion ministering angel
dog will have his day frailty, thy name is woman neither a borrower nor a lender be
brevity is the soul of wit mind's eye primrose path
flaming youth it smells to heaven the lady doth protest too much
witching time of the night it's Greek to me live long day
breathe one's last heart of gold give the devil his due
too much of a good thing naked truth foregone conclusion
break the ice strange bedfellows wear one's heart on one's sleeve
all that glitters isn't gold eat out of house and home be all and end all
more sinned against than sinning one fell swoop the milk of human kindness
the course of true love never did run smooth

In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase......... "goodnight, sleep tight."

-Of the 154 sonnets or poems, the playwright penned, William's first 26 were said to be directed to an aristocratic young man who did not want to marry. Sonnets 127 - 152 talk about a dark woman, the Bard seems to have had mixed feelings for.

Here's a concept for you to chew on. While there is some doubt about who Shakespeare actually was, there is little doubt that the same person wrote all of Shakespeare's works. No matter what, that is an incredible achievement.
Shakespeare's use on language, as many of you note, was also remarkable. There are a lot of words he coined. He also was able to use words in unique ways. How many of you would be brave enough to use "uncle" as a verb?
Also important about Shakespeare is that once you get past the language, and you will, his work is accessible to everyone because it talks about things we all can relate to: jealousy, love, death, revenge, ambition, good and evil. Who doesn't have a need to examine these things?
His plays are vital and alive. Also, when you look at his sonnets, bear in mind that this is a person who could discuss love, destiny, anxiety, mortality, etc, in complete forms in just 140 syllables. Not bad for a dead white guy.

What's the deal? Here are a few tips for choosing a topic, and collecting pieces of art, and information to support whichever topic you choose. My particular topic last year was figuritivism. I "studied" in my eyes, the beauty of the human figure, and body language and how in a simple painting on a canvas so much can be said through the body, and how it is held. I learned alot, make sure you choose a topic you are actually interested in because the process is long, and it doesnt have to be painful, it CAN be fun. Also, the deadline creeps up on you aolt sooner than you think so don't wait it out.BE CREATIVE!

Boys and men played all the parts in Shakespeare's plays in Elizabethan times

Shakespeare was 17 or 18 when he married. His wife, Anne Hathaway, was 26.

Dictionaries as we know them today were not available in Shakespeare's time.

The motto of the Globe Theatre was totus mundus agit histrionem (all the world's a stage).

No one knows how Shakespeare died. Among the possibilities are kidney disease, murder most foul, and too much to drink.
