G Block: 5-5

Hi, class. Please visit and peruse the following sites and answer the corresponding questions as a comment here (due by 1:57).

Check out artist/photographer Chris Jordan. Click here to enter his website. Explore his work under the "artworks" option. Be sure to zoom in on his images to understand how they're constructed. Also, be sure to read the descriptions below each image. Many of his pieces look simple on the surface until you see how they're constructed.

Part A: Why do you think that Jordan spends his time depicting the images he chooses to depict? What might be his "thesis statement"?

Part B: This is an online scavenger hunt. Use you reasoning and search skills to answer the following questions:

1. How many windows are in Andrew Wyeth's "Master Bedroom"? What medium does Wyeth use?
2. Identify the figure depicted in a boat in Michelangelo's "Last Judgement".
3. What pachyderm is distorted in the background of Salvador Dali's "One Second Before Awakening from a Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee Around a Pomegranate"?
4. What time is it in Vincent van Gogh's "Night Cafe"?
5. Monet and Manet are both Impressionists and have similarities beyond their names. Compare and contrast these two artists.
6.. Who is Camille Claudel? Examine her "L'Age Mur" and identify the 3 figures depicted.
7. Identify the works stolen during the infamous Gardner Museum heist. Identify and describe your favorite piece.
8. Summarize the "legend" behind the man with the top hat in Eugene Delacroix's most famous painting.
9. What is David Mach's "Gorilla" made of?
10. Describe your favorite Ron Mueck sculpture.
11. Paul Rahilly is one of my former professors. a) What breed of dog is depicted in his "Girl in a Paper Dress"? b) In which of his paintings does one find a chili pepper? c) a brioche?

Part C: Autostereograms are algorithmic images which allow people to see three-dimensional images by focusing on two-dimensional patterns. In the 90's stereograms, or "magic eye" images were popularized. I was surprised by the fact that very few students knew of them. Maybe I'm getting old.

If you're curious, click on the links below. Choose a fixed point in the center of the image and stare, allowing your eyes to relax or "blur". Eventually, you will see a three dimensional image appear. Be patient- it may take a while, and some people are simply unable to see them.

Part A:
I think Jordan chooses to do the art he does to symbolize things in society that are extremely ridiculous, like the piece of art that uses bottle caps to depict how many bottles Americans consume every minute.
A thesis statement for his art could be:
In his art, Chris Jordan uses symbolism to turn everyday objects into art, and convey a deeper meaning.
Part B:
1. One window, he uses watercolor
2. Some guy with a stick
3. A tiger

Part A:
Jordan spends time depicting these images because he sees that presenting the statistics as a real visual may have more of an effect on people than just numbers.
In his artwork, Chris Jordan employs the use of actual items to depict statistics that affect our everyday world, by depicting these statistics as a visual in a piece, more people are affected as they are presented with the actual threat to the world that they are performing and change their ways.

Part B:
1) There is 1 window. Wyeth used watercolors.
2) Charon
3) Elephant
4) 12:15
5) Monet’s paintings usually depict nature scenes, occasionally with figures within them. Monet’s style is more pieced with short strokes of different shades of colors. Manet paints figures in almost all of his paintings, and focuses on the civilization, rather than nature. Both artists, however share the traits of using more pastel colors, and not having a real feeling other than serenity. They paintings are painted as the artists saw them. The figures do not have very expressive expressions.
6) French sculptor. Camille, Rodin, and Rose.

Why do you think that Jordan spends his time depicting the images he chooses to depict? What might be his "thesis statement"?
Chris Jordan spends so much time depicting images because he wants the person viewing his work to get a good understanding of what he is trying to say or give an example of.
How many windows are in Andrew Wyeth's "Master Bedroom"?
– There is only one window.
What medium does Wyeth use?
- The medium is paint.

Identify the figure depicted in a boat in Michelangelo's "Last Judgment".
-There seems to be a darker man on the end of the boat. He seems like he could mimic a darker Satan.

What pachyderm is distorted in the background of Salvador Dali's "One Second Before Awakening from a Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee Around a Pomegranate"?
-There is an elephant hanging by something in the background of the image.

What time is it in Vincent van Gogh's "Night Cafe"?
-It is 12:15 in his picture.

Monet and Manet are both Impressionists and have similarities beyond their names.
Compare and contrast these two artists.
Monet’s full name is Oscar Claude Monet and he was born and passed, November 14th, 1840 – December 5th, 1926. He was a founder of the French impressionist painting, and the most consistent practitioner. H had a passion for nature and applied to his painting.
Manet ‘s full name is Édouard Manet and he was born and passed, January 23rd 1832 – April 30th, 1883. He was one of the first to be interested in modern-life subjects and was a figure in Realism and Impression.

Who is Camille Claudel? Examine her "L'Age Mur" and identify the 3 figures depicted.
Camille Claudel was born December 4th, 1864 and passed October 19th, 1943. She was born in Fère-en-Tardenois, Aisne, in northern France.
The first figure depicted is the young child trying to hold on to what may be her father’s hand.
The second figure would be the man, who seems to be pulling away from the young girl.
The third and final figure is the person who is kissing the man’s head.

A.) Jordan probably depicts the images that he chooses because its images that people don’t see every day, even though they have objects that people use every day. It’s basically symbolizing how people today are destroying the environment. Like how the images have deceased bird but there’s trash inside the body. The thesis statement might be, “In the images, Chris Jordan uses unordinary objects and deceased animals in order to emphasize on how people today are treating the environment.

B.)

1.) There is only one window in Andrew Wyeth's Master Bedroom. The medium of the painting would be water colors.

2.) The figure in the boat of Last Judgment would be the boatman Charon. Charon is the mythical boatman of Roman and Greek mythology who ferried the damned to hell.

3.) An elephant is distorted in the background of Salvador Dali's "One Second Before Awakening from a Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee Around a Pomegranate.”

4.) The time in Night Café is 12:15.

5.) Manet and Monet were both french impressionsts, Manet was one of the first painters to begin working in the impressionist art period. He used broad colors with a quick brush technique and did many studio drawings. Monet had an influence on Manet, Monet. Manet, also used quick brush strokes but, he put paint directly on the canvas without sketching the composition out first. Monet used individualized color and focused on capturing the effects of light and color on nature.

6.) Camille Claudel is a French sculptor and graphic artist in the 1800’s. L’Age Mur is one of Claudel’s sculptors that is bronze and is symbolizing how Camille pleads for Auguste Rodin not to leave her for his former mistress.

7.) "The Concert" by Johannes Vermeer, "The Storm of the Sea of Galilee" by Rembrandt van Rijn, and "Landscape with an Obelisk" by Govaert Flinck. My favorite one would have to be The Storm of the Sea of Galilee by Rembrandt van Rijn, because it shows how tough times are during a storm at sea. The colors show how one can be amazed by the painting.

8.) The legend in Delacroix's "Liberty Leading the People" is that Delacroix is the man in the top hat holding a musket. The painting depicts Persians celebrating liberty under the tricolor flag.

9.) The Gorilla is made out of coat hangers.

Part A: Why do you think that Jordan spends his time depicting the images he chooses to depict? What might be his "thesis statement"?
I think he depicts those images because he wants to show the views of other worlds. His thesis statement might be something like, “The world is comprised of many unique cultures that should remind us that we are all different and that we must accept it”.

Part B: This is an online scavenger hunt. Use you reasoning and search skills to answer the following questions:

1. How many windows are in Andrew Wyeth's "Master Bedroom"? What medium does Wyeth use?
There is one window. He used three dimensional art as his medium.

She was a French sculptor and graphic artist. The figures are a horse, a man riding it, and a kneeling woman.

5. Monet and Manet are both Impressionists and have similarities beyond their names. Compare and contrast these two artists.

Both are french impressionists. Monet painted a ton of landscapes and scenes while Manet did a lot of work with people as the main subjects and painted outside. Manet used a lot more lines in his paintings then other Impressionist painters and preferred painting in a studio.

Facts on Monet: tried to kill himself, married twice, two kids from the first woman, retired to Giverny and finally made some loot in his later days.

Facts on Manet: war scenes, shared a girlfriend with his dad, died of some nasty stuff at a relatively early age.

(1658–1660); and Govaert Flinck’s Landscape with an Obelisk (1638), as well as an etching on paper and a Chinese

Jordan chooses to depict images that form optical illusions. The images he spends time on need to be looked at carefully to realize the detail and dedication that he puts into his work. Each of his paintings relates to a statistic. For example, he uses two million plastic beverage bottles in one of the images to show the large number of plastic bottles used in the United States every five minutes.
Part B
1. Andrew Wythe has one window in his “Master Bedroom”.
5. Monet paints directly on the canvas without sketching anything first, Manet sketches before painting. Both are French impressionists who use quick brush strokes.
6. Claudel is a French sculptor. Claudel was a graphic artist during the 1800s. “L’Age Mur” is a sculpture made of bronze that shows Claudel pleading for Auguste Rodin not to leave her for another woman.
7. “The Concert” by Johannes Vermeer, “The Storm of the Sea of Galilee” by Rembrandt van Rijn, and “Landscape with an Obelisk” by Govarent were all stolen from the museum. My favorite was “The Storm of the Sea of Galilee” it is a painting of a ship full of people during a bad storm. I really like the detail in the painting.
8. The legend is that Delacroix is wearing a top hat holding a muskat. The painting shows Persians celebrating!
9. David Mach’s “Gorilla” is made up of coat hangers.
10. I like Ron Muek’s sculpture of the giant baby.
11. a. Paul Rahilly depicts the dog in the painting to look like a poodle. b. A chili pepper can be found in his painting “Beef and Vegetables”. c. A brioche can be found in the painting “Brioche, Pears and Eggs”.
