Beluga Whale Proposal

Summary: A few small sized drawings of beluga whales. One view will be of the whale swimming, the next will be a front wards view, and the last will be of the whale from a distance. It'll all be in black and white, which is easy to do because beluga whales are already white. It will capture the lighting perfectly on the whale and will be beautiful to draw.

Background: Beluga whales have been my all time favorite animals since I went to the San Diego Sea World and saw them up close and personal. They are extreamly gentle and magestic. They are also playful and fun too. People say they claim to see the beluga "smile". They make the most different kinds of sounds out of any specieis, other than the human. They can blow water bubbles out of their mouths and blow-holes. They are classified with dolphins, but are really whales. They are just smaller sized whales. They are hunted in the Artic ): !!!

The Project: Look at many seperate pictures of different views of beluga whales, pick which 3 you like the best, do they block-in, render values, and compare all three when finished.

Supplies and Costs:
-Pencils (HB, 2B, 4B) 45 cents.
-Paper (8x10 or a little smaller) 50 cents.
-3 Black and white photos of beluga whales of your choice. No price.
-Clay eraser. $1.00

Conclusion: All in all, the project as a whole will be a complete study of beluga whales and how they live and act, a search for 3 good pictures that fit the description, completed 3 drawings of the whales, and a comparison.

My proposed area of study will revolve around plant life. The focus of this study will incorporate texture, shading, and many realistic qualities of each plant. The drawings will be done in mainly black and white while adding some subtle elements of color to make certain aspects of each drawing “come to life.”

The combination of these elements will help further my understanding of plant life; specifically with the Japanese Cherry Blossom. The Japanese Cherry Blossom is a renowned symbol of Japan. This particular plant is very important to the Japanese culture. The Japanese Cherry Blossom “represents the end of the winter and the beginning of new life and the growing season of spring.” There are multiple categories of Japanese Cherry Blossoms such as yaezakura and shidarezakura. Each category possesses a different element which makes each plant appealing.

My proposed area of study will consist of three different drawings; one for each category of the Japanese Cherry Blossom. The yaezakura category consists of, “large flowers, thick with rich pink petals.” The shidarezakura “has branches that fall like those of a weeping willow, bearing cascades of pink flowers.” Both studies will be close-ups of each tree and will contain either black and white blossoms with a colored background or a black and white background with a colorful highlight to the blossoms of the tree.

In order to create my drawings, I will be in need of multiple supplies. To create the black and white aspect of my drawings, I will need a number two HB pencil. For the colored elements, I will need colored pencils. Primarily, I will need different shades of the color pink in order to create the overall liveliness of the blossoms. In order to convey the overall image of the Japanese Cherry Blossoms, I will also need two pieces of Strathmore paper. The overall price for these three items is $17. 49.

Through the use of texture, shading, and the use of realistic qualities, this study will help my overall knowledge of this plant “blossom.” Not only will this study help with the understanding of the Japanese Cherry Blossom, it will help with the understanding of a culture. Native to the lands of Japan, this tree is well known, but it is not fully appreciated. This study will help with the overall appreciation for a plant and a culture.

Leaf Proposal
Abstract:
The artwork I am going to produce will be of leaves. I am planning to take a photo of a pile of leaves then draw one big one in the center out of miniature colored ones then have it fade into a black and white background. I am going to use prisma color for my composition and white paper.
Background:
I enjoy the fall and it is one of my favorite seasons so I wanted to express that through this idea. I have never draw leaves before so it will be something new for me and I look forward to doing it. This will be a new challenge for me and I will get to learn how to fade from color to black and white. I think there may be some difficulty drawing smaller details however I think it will turn out good in the end.
Description:
1. First I am going to get a good photo online of a pile of leaves
2. Then I am going to project it onto a wall and trace it onto paper
3. Lastly I will add in my colors then eventually fade out from my darkest to lightest colors in black and white.
Materials:
Mi Tienes Paper (White) $2
Prisma Color Pack $12
Conclusion:
In the end I expect my composition to be complete and what I thought it would be. I know that I am going to use hatching as oppose to burnishing. With the rubric guidelines I think that my block-in will be all set since I will be using a projection and that edging will be very sharp when working with black and white when the light is hitting the leaves. I think it will turn out realistic since I will be copying it and using colored pencil to shade and add detail.

Abstract/Executive Summary
My project will be a series of studies based on candid photos. It will serve as a preliminary tool to a larger project that combines several subjects into one scene. The studies will be in pencil and/or ink, and specifically use the sort of technique used to create the Libyan Sibyl. It may be detailed or not, and include specific segments of the scene in detail, in the vein of Harvey Dinnerstein.
Background/existing base of knowledge
As an experienced people-watcher, I enjoy the details of candid shots and the interesting ways you can pick up personality in observing the average pedestrian in a city. In this case, several hundred shots were taken, eighty printed, and just over forty chosen to be subjects. This project will help narrow down the subjects. Each has a distinct personality and I look forward to capturing their unique states.
Statement of Need
The project is essential to furthering my understanding of my subjects before completing the final drawing. My teacher for that class and I have creative differences, and she does not understand what my goal is with doing studies. I, however, feel that it is a new and interesting way for me to explore my topic.
Project Description
The project will consist of five to ten detailed sketches of the Cambridge Creatures, not including the background, and perhaps including props and accessories from the original photos. Hatching and leaving unfinished some extremities may be employed, similarly to the Michelangelo work of the Libyan Sibyl.
Budget
HB Pencil
Pilot Precise v5 pen (black)
Plastic and/or kneaded eraser
Strathmore paper, cropped to smaller size

For many years, a very large interest of mine has been the piano, which has brought me to focus on doing a grand piano for my independent study. Being the largest type of piano, the grand piano has a lid which can be opened to make the music louder due to the chords located under the lid, or it can stay closed. When played correctly, this instrument creates beautiful and melodic sounds. The visually appealing, elligent grand piano will be a very interesting object to draw, if the correct tools are used.

The study will consist of a block-in of a side-view with the lid open, a birds-eye view, and a close-up of the piano keys. The drawings will be done in number two graphite pencil with a variety of HB, 4B, 2B, and 2H. It will be drawn on Strathmore paper. The setting of the final drawing (side view) will be in an empty room, which brings the focus on the detail of the piano. By creating a specific light source, it will add excellent value in the drawings.

With my heavy interest in piano and my opinionated feeling of beauty towards the grand piano, this independent study will be a great piece for me to work on. It will help strengthen my respect for the piano and every individual detail it has.

food proposal

Abstract:
For my independent study, I would like to investigate different types of food. I will draw my favorite types of vegetables, fruits, and dairy products. My favorite meals and snacks will also be included. The initial goal is to become better at shading, rendering, and edging my work. There is no specific area I will be focusing on because I will be focusing on them all. I need to focus on them all because they are all in need of improvement. The ultimate goal is to have a better understanding of the foods I will be preparing in the future.

Background/Base Knowledge:
Culinary Arts is my choice of a major for college as of now. I have always had a love for cooking, and cook at least once a week. Unlike some people, I have a love for all foods. Some of my favorite foods are vegetables and fruits. I have always had an interest in different kinds of foods. Therefore, my study of foods will benefit myself and my future choices.

Project Description:
For my project, I will begin with sketches of my favorite vegetables. Then I will continue with sketches of my favorite fruits and dairy products. When I get the main idea of all these objects, I will do more in depth drawings of the key foods I like. From there, I will begin drawings of my two favorite meals and one snack. Also, for one of my favorite meals, I will create drawings for the directions of how to make the meal. In total, there will be at least 6 drawings. The whole project will be put together into a recipe book. I will use different writing utensils such as: pen, pencil, colored pencil, and charcoal. I will also use different drawing techniques.

Materials/Budget:
I will use white paper for all the drawings. Pen, pencil, colored pencil, and charcoal will be used to create the drawings. There will be no budget because I will be supplying the paper and writing utensils. Vegetables, fruits, and some dairy products will be used as models for my drawings.

Conclusion:
The independent study will help me further my drawing experience. It will give me more time to go more in depth with rendering, shading, and edging. With this project, I will be able to take more of my own time to draw to my potential. Also, I can draw my favorite foods which will not only be fun for me, but experience with different drawing techniques and models.

Project Proposal
The object I would like to do for my independent study is hands. I would like to do an anatomical study of human hands. My background knowledge of hands extends only to the fact that I have two of them. I have never studied about the bones, muscles, or nerves in the hands and I am very interested to learn about this as well as draw it. I have drawn hands only once in my Art 2 class this year and it has been my favorite thing to draw so far. I like the simplicity of them and that they are mostly made of lines. They can make any gesture that you want and each one has a different difficulty level of drawing. This makes them a challenge but because I enjoyed drawing them so much once I feel I will have the motivation to draw them extensively.
My project will begin with simple sketches of hands making different gestures. It will then include a drawing of a skeletal hand, a hand of muscles, and a hand of nerves. It will be concluded with a fully rendered drawing of the human hands. I will look up hands in different positions and carefully look at the anatomy of the hand to attempt to improve my drawing skills. These sketches will not be in color. Each sketch leading up to the final, fully rendered hands will not be as detailed as the last one but they will give a general idea of what the anatomy of the hand is.
I will be doing these sketches in pencil. I want to use white paper so there are no distractions from the intricacy of the anatomy of the hands. Neither of these things are things that I will need to buy so there is no budget for my project. There are no other materials I will need besides sketches of hands to refer to in every form (muscular, skeletal, nervous) which I can print from my house.
Overall I hope to not only expand on my knowledge of the anatomy of something amazing that allows us to do everything we need to everyday, but also to expand my ability in drawing. Drawing hands will not be easy but it is a challenge that I am excited to take on and learn more about. By the end of this project, I hope to have many sketches of hands along with four solid, detailed drawings of their anatomy. I am excited to draw something of my choice and learn more about something that is so useful and interesting in so many ways.

Plastic and/or kneaded eraser* (<$1 for plastic eraser)
Strathmore paper*, cropped to smaller size
*I already own this item and will not need to purchase it.

Conclusion: This project will further my knowledge of the Cambridge Creatures, and allow me to figure out which of the Creatures is most suitable for my larger project.

Treefort Proposal

Summary: I plan to focus my attention on the concept of childhood, and recapturing the magic that was within it. Their will be a multitude of views that focus on tree fort's high up on large oak trees. I plan to make the entire picture black and white, except one light inside of the tree house that will illuminate outside of one or two windows, capturing the dreamlike state of childhood.

Background: When I was younger I enjoyed climbing tree's, climbing higher than my friends and daring myself to climb the biggest of trees. I dreamed of building the classic tree fort throughout all of my childhood, but never got the chance to actually complete it. I hope to reanimate that dream through art, and I will draw it in such a way that represents the magic of being a kid.

The Project: I plan to look at a few pictures of tree forts, and I will begin by picking at least 2 or 3 from different angles. I will draw the tree fort's but with my own style incorporated

Supplies/Cost:
-Pencils(HB, 2B) 50 cents
-Paper (8X10) $1
-Colored pencils $3

Conclusion: This project will attempt to capture the essence of adventure during childhood. I will use other photo's to help direct me toward my final product, but I will use most of my own ideas and style.

Hello Jamie,
I love your idea of the grand piano being your composition. The grand piano has a great anatomy to it which will allow for a great photo as a product. I love that you're doing all the different views of the piano to capture the elegance of its' form. Since pianos have a beautiful gloss and wood stain which will be challenging but in the end super pretty to do the contrast of the light to dark value on a glare!

I LOVE IT - Bri

1. Be supportive; everything I do is a gift from God
2. Guide my drawing in the right direction if I am doing something repeatedly wrong in all my renderings
I will have four fully rendered drawings and many sketches or block ins that I will start off with.

Photorealistic drawing

I will be doing a photorealistic drawing of a seascape. I love the ocean and have always wanted to draw a picture of it and have it look real. The photo I will be using is called Surf by Edward Minoff. I will have to print out this picture in black and white.

What I will be doing is projecting the picture onto the whiteboard to trace. Then I will have the black and white picture to refer to for shading and lines. This picture will be drawn in pencil.

The supplies I will need are HB, 2B, 4B graphite pencils, a clay eraser, black and white print out, and a 12x24 piece of strathmore paper. The prive for these supplies is around $10.

Dear Mike Feeney,

Your idea on the symbolization of childhood through a tree house is an awesome idea. It is very creative and like how you're going to come up with your own style to the treehouse instead of strictly copying one. I'm looking forward to seeing your finsihed piece.
-Jamie

Dear Kandylstick,
your idea is adorable and I love it a lot. I like the different angles you're going to do to incorporate how they live everyday.
-Jamie

Dear David,
I love your idea on bringing in cultural knowledge of the blossom into your art work. AWESOME!

Kendyl: So excited to see your whale pictures, the black and white is going to look so dramatic/intense.

David: I love your proposal, and I love that you talked about the meaning of the cherry blossoms rather than just drawing them randomly

Morgan: I am really excited to see your leaf project I love leaves and nature, I think the black and white pictures will look really dramatic

Kara: Your project sounds interesting, as long as they are people who won't mind you using your picture, cool unique idea

Jamie: I love that you are combining the love of something musical with art, your project is going to be so beautiful

Natalie: Using food is so creative, I think its cool that you want to study culinary arts and you are connecting that with this project

Neeve: Hands are so personal and unique to every person making them really hard to draw. I think you are brave for choosing them to study. Your project is going to look awesome, especially if you create genstures and motion

Mike: I love how you connect art with the idea of a childhood treehouse, awesome idea I think it will be really cool in black and white

Jenna Aries

Summary: I want to re-create a picture of my mom and I. I can’t decide if I want to do colored pencil or black and white (help!). I’m going to do photo realism so it looks exactly like the picture. It is roughly going to be medium sized, making our faces real life sized.

Background: My mom and I have been so close forever. Leaving for college is going to be so hard for both of us. I think this picture of me and her will be a nice thing for her to have and always remind her of how close we are even when I’m not home. She has always been there for me and I love her so much!

Project Description: Like I said earlier I am still trying to decide if I want the picture in colored pencils or in black and white. All in all it is going to be photo realism of a picture of me and my mom.

Budget:
Stonehendge paper - $2.00
Prisma colored pencils- $15.00
The HB pencils- $3.00
Clay eraser- $1.00

Conclusion: I hope that I can re-create this picture as closely as I can! I want to get the finished product framed for my mom for Christmas 

I would post the picture but i cant on here...

I propose a study of trees. I will create a collection of five drawings/paintings using different mediums (pen, pencil, colored pencil, and watercolor) portraying various trees. Some will be in color, some will be in black and white. I will experiment with the use of realism and more abstract interpretations to create a vastly different array of artwork revolving around the theme of trees.

I am an avid lover of nature, and trees are the most beautiful part.Growing up in the woods, I have always been surrounded by different species of trees, each one so rough and natural. From an artistic aspect, trees are magnificent to draw because of the shape and beautiful imperfection they have. There are so many kinds of trees; the variety will make my drawings interesting. I adore the ancient idea of h Tree of Life and share a spiritual connection with nature.

The main idea of my project is to celebrate the diversity of trees trough portraying them n different aspects and with different mediums. I will have 5 drawings: one in black and white focusing on the image of dead trees, on will be a photorealistic representation of a woman in a tree and will be drawn in colored pencil, one will be a more abstract depiction of a tree curled into the silhouette of a person, and the last two will be done in watercolor of two different species of trees.

I will need Strathmore paper, watercolor paper, sketching pencils, colored pencils, Bic pens, watercolor paints and brushes, and of course the sketching essentials: pencil sharpener, a clay eraser, a blending tool, and good music.

In all, the project will be a study and tribute to the beautiful giants of nature: trees. Through different mediums, papers, and ideas I will be celebrating the diversity of trees and the beauty of nature. In the end, I will have 5 diverse drawings and will have a better understanding of these incredible plants.
