POS: Poetry Research Assessment

Please respond to the following questions completely and carefully. You may use your notes for this assessment, but you may not refer to the research itself. Your responses will receive a letter grade based upon the school-wide writing rubric (available on edline).

1. I began my paper with a piece of narrative imagery. Describe this image and how it relates to the research as a whole. (10 points)
2. Produce a bulleted list of 5 of the salient benefits of poetic instruction. (20 points)
3. This paper was not driven by a thesis but by an essential question. If I were to produce a thesis for this paper, what would it look like (write it)? (20 points)
4. I claim that "central to a defense of poetry’s value are several conclusive tenets". Identify the tenets. (20 points)
5. I am planning on continuing my research on this topic. What suggestions would you have for further research? What considerations did I fail to acknowledge that I should revisit or explore? (20 points)

1. The research paper starts out with a teenager at the school computer lab listening to music and going on the computer. This relates to how this new generation relies a lot on technology, and how everything else seems to becoming obsolete. Poetry is pushed out of the curriculum and is being replaced with other courses (computer, math, etc.).
2. –develop analytical skills
-learn to evoke a range of feelings
-stimulate personal perspectives
-add color to description
-Less artificial conversations

3.Poetry appears to be outdated due to the competitive curriculum throughout school systems; unfortunately poetry’s straightforward and pure diction is overlooked.
4. ………………??????????????????
5. You should research feedback from students and see their opinions and why they feel that way. You should also consider that most English classes make their students quite aware of famous pieces of poetry, so the students get a feel for if they like it or not.

1. The piece of imagery used was a student in a classroom asking what a certain poetic device was. The research is about the importance of poetry in an education and the student represents the need of the instruction. It shows that the teaching of poetic device lacks in today’s society and needs to be reintroduced.

2. Poetic Instruction
a. Enhance Vocabulary
b. Cultural Awareness
c. Poetic Devices
d. Communication Skills
e. Social References to time periods; understanding Old English

3. Throughout history, poetry has been an essential part of an education and vital to the overall enhancement of speech, culture and society that can be related through music to reach out towards several audiences.

4. The tenants are that poetry is a form of literature written in a certain expressive way that increases the overall enhancement of a person in education and thinking. Poetry is a universal way of expressing emotions without distinctively saying them, and it makes the readers analyze and interpret in their own way; a unique aspect of poetry. It is the belief that poetry has many affects on the mind and deeper understanding.

5. I would suggest looking into the different types of poetry and poems and how certain authors express their emotions. For example, what is the history of the haiku? The origin of poetry in essential to understanding the deeper meaning, especially when the first forms of writing developed through short verses of words; a form of poetry. By exploring the origin and developments in different areas of the world will create a higher cultural awareness that was already in the research, but can be looked further in to.

1. The opening describes a young teenage boy sitting in front of a computer at the computer lab. It describes the irony of the modern young adult, how the young generation has all the information in the world readily at their finger tips, but they do little with it. The essay talks of the evolution of language, poetry, and learning, and the opening image gives a context for the current state of the American teenage learner.
2. Art is a necessary form of culture for the evolution of human thinking, and because poetry is a form of art, poetry is necessary. Poetry adds to our understanding, memorization, and comprehension of language. Poetry offers a straight to the heart interpretation of thought and feelings. Poetry offers an encapsulation of different time periods, giving a very relevant and comprehensive understanding of history and culture. Music is a form of poetry, there for music is essential.
3. Though poetry has fallen in popularity compared to early times, poems and the poetic art is still an irreplaceable aspect of daily life and is necessary in the development of culture.
4. I thought that number 2 was number 4. I can’t find number 2.
5. You should try and be less clinical in your images of people. Try replacing “iris” with just “eyes” in the opening image. “Iris” holds little emotional weight and reminds me that I’m reading something, not viewing something. Also, the opening feels very choppy and unconnected, yet each sentence seems to gain more and more complexity. Try and spread out the lengthy sentences and the short, succinct sentences.

1. There was a boy sitting in front of a computer with his headphones in his ears. He was listening to music while the computer was turning on. He was fiddling with the mouse to make the flashes on the computer. He was born into a world of opportunity and advancement. This relates to the research as a whole because we take advantage of the technology and depend on it more.
2. 1. Interactive learning with music.
2. More understanding of poetry.
3. A deeper respect for poetry.
4. Poetic devices in poetry.
5. The influence of poetry on education.
3. Many people are able to grasp a deeper understanding of poetry through the different learning techniques.
-Ashlie Sprague

1.)it's about a boy who was sitting in his chair listening to music and ignoring what was going on around him. this relates to the research as a whole because it shows how music is taking over and has importance to people over many things.
2.)-a concise overview of english language poetry
-poetry, education, and human experience
-poetic lyricism and the link between poetry and music
-methodology
3.)in the world today, music has taken over our population in such a way that people rely on music to help with their own personal problems in life.

1. The image is of a student with his/her ear buds on in class. He is engulfed in his music, but how does one connect to this student, poetry wise? This relates to the paper as a whole because, all in all, it describes students and how poetry involves and affects them.
2.
• Poetry adds to vocabulary and the English language.
• Poetry can extend the range of human experiences through imagination
• Poetry can preserve memory
• Poetry can make the student reach a higher level of complexity through the imagery of poetry
• Some businesses are starting to like people that know poetry, it develops a new right-brain thinking trend
3. Despite what one may think, the instruction of poetry for the younger generations is invaluable to the development of future generations.
4. The beliefs are that poetry helps students connect to life. It opens up emotions for people, and doesn’t ask for anything back. It expands vocabulary and the imagination. The human experience increases when reading poetry.
5. I think in further research you should focus even more on today’s culture and the music. Since the paper was based off this Poetry of Song class, it would be beneficial to research what music students listen to, and why, in depth. I also think it would be nice to research universal relevance a little more.

1. In the beginning of the research, it explains a boy on his computer listeing to his music, with white earphones being fed from his pocket, into his ear. This relates to the research because the boy is listeing to music, which is closely related to poetry. However, youth today does not think of music as poetry, because poetry is usually avoided by younger people.
2. The 5 salient benefits are:
- Poetry helpls us be more sensitive, and makes our lives more complex.
- Employers want to hire someone with a complex mind, which can be obtained by reading poetry.
- Poetry helps our memory and helps us read into things more.
- Poetry helps us notice that our thoughs are unique, and my not be the same as everyone else's.
-The history of English language is displayed in poetry.
3. In "An Examination of the Literature Regarding the Signifigance of Poetry in the Modern World", Todd Paul Kefor uses multiple resources to illustrate the importance of poetry and music.

1. I began my paper with a piece of narrative imagery. Describe this image and how it relates to the research as a whole.
The imagery shows a 21st century student, unaffected by the amazing technology of the computer and iPod he’s using. Copious adjectives actually seem to alienate the image, the writing from the rest of the essay. This shows our century, and how the amazing isn’t appreciated. In relation to this, poetry is also taken for granted.

-Kara Mackie... more to come later, sorry.

1. In the beginning a boy who is listneing to his iPod while on the computer is introduced. This relates to the research because music, which he is listening to, contains poetic lyrics (most likely.) This goes to show that while this generation doesn't like to examine poems, we do like other forms of poetry such as music.

2. Poetry is important to learn/understand for several resons:
-Poetry makes us more sensitive, and have more complex lives. We can never reach our full potential without poetry.
-Employers want to hire those with complex minds, which are reached through poetry.
-Poetry helps with our memory, and remembering past events. It makes us read more deeply into things.
-Poetry helps us realize we have unique thoughts, and that others may have different thoughts than us.
-The history of English language is displayed in poetry. Understanding poetry will lead to a further understanding in English language.

3. Throughout "An Examination of the Literature REgarding The Significance of Poetry in the Modern World", Todd Paul Kefor uses mutiple resources to prove that music is vital in society today, and helped us get to where we are, and also that understanding poetry is very advantagous.

1. A kid plugs his headphones into his ears as he is on the computer in computer class. This relates to the significance of music and technology in the learning of students and the powerful impact these technologies are having on students today.
2. -Helps our brain develop problem-solving skills
4. Language is essential to human existence. Poetry lends itself to comprehension and retention.Poetry offers a refreshingly pure and uninhibited form of communication in a world of artificial, programmed language. Modern implementation of poetry must appeal to current generation. Music has to be presented and analyzed as poetry.

1. A young man is sitting at his computer listening to his iPod and surfing the web. This image relates to the idea of the inexhaustible resource of the Internet and how, ironically, this is leading to a decrease in the search for information and knowledge in young people.
3. In a time where technology inhibits the desire to read and write poetry, educators must find alternative methods of teaching it; of all the methods available, the study of music is the most effective.

5. While the paper is very comprehensive, it would be very beneficial to include some of the Poetry of Song classes in your research so that you have experience to draw

1. The imagery that was used was a student in the computer lab listening to music. This relates to the rest of the paper because it talks about poetry of song and analyzing the music we listen too. It also relates to the rest of the paper because the paper talks about the similarities poetry and music.
2.
• Poetry
• Human experience
• Cultural values
• Relates to the youth
• Social
3. One would assume that the meaning of music should not be taught in class. However, if one were to actually take time to look at lyrics they would see that music is filled with poetry.
4.
• Language is important to human cultural existence. Poetry is emotive, artful, and essential.
• Poetry is comprehension and retention. It offers a uniquely auditory.
• In a world of art poetry offers pure communication.
• Educators should integrate poetry in a way that is linguistic.
• Music must be presented as a form of poetry.

1) The frist piece of your research paper was an image of a boy at his school computer lab, with ipod buds in his ear.
2) ?
3) In order to successfully teach a class about poetry, one must appeal to the students likes and musical preference.
4) The tenets are the beliefs that poets cannot find thier place in the modern world.
5)I love how you touch base with the fact that poets are "true digital speakers". I think you should expand upon the belief.

1. The paper begins with a student sitting at a desk listening to music also while on his computer. This imagery emphasizes the plethora of technology this generation has available to them. It connects to the paper as a whole because the youth today is losing connection to deeper meanings of things (i.e. Poetry) due to the fact that we can “Google” anything and just find the answer instead of actually trying to find it ourselves. Many of today students will not make the effort to read actual books and analyze them but instead just go on a website such as “Sparknotes” and take the easy way out.
2. –Language is an essential part of life and poetry is a more complex version of language therefore poetry is an essential part of life. It shows the evolution of language.
-Understanding poetry is essential and will serve as a stepping stone to understanding other things on a more complex level.
-Poetry is a new and interesting form of language, therefore worth learning; it will expand your mind.
-Students can relate to poetry (or music, which is a form of poetry) and that will expose you to different cultures.

In my junior year of high school my class had to write a thesis paper about the different and similar features for the most popular and most frequent processors.

Are all computer processors the same? Do they perform differently than some of the most uncommon ones. And does it matter that you have to have a specific processor for specific pc features?

The inside of a computer is like a human brain only made out of metal. Each part is important to make the brain work. And they all have their own functions. However the most important part is the processor. The outside of almost all of the processor chips look the same but you can't really see the difference unless you actually turn on the computer itself and look at it through task manager.

Special features are really cool but can only be run by specific processors. For example the first pentium processor was called Pentium 386. This processor was only cappable of running Windows 9x, 3.1, Windows 98 (jet lagged), and Windows 95 (somewhat stable). But later on in the late 90's Intel and AMD started to compete with each other.

And long and behold the Semprons, XP Athelon, Celeron, Dual and Quad Cores,Pentium D (dual threader), M (multi-threader), and HT (hyper threader) came out. And nowadays you have the new i7 pentium processor.

In sumation are all pc processors the same? The answer is no due to instability and total capacity to run multi and dual booted operating systems. Or even just one simple operating system. Without having to use a big server or small workstation pc. Like most technicians like myself run and use today.

4.-Poetry is an emotional form of language and language is essential to our species.
-Poetry helps us memorize things easily. There are many interpretations.
-Poetry offer a form of "pure" communication which is important in a world where language is more "programmed."
-In order for this generation to really appreciate poetry, educators must present it in a way that we understand, through media and technology.
-Music must be examined as poetry.

5. For the best results you should not just have us analyze one song in 30 minutes, you should have us analyze multiple songs over the course, each for 30 minutes. This will make the results more accurate. Also, choose songs from different genres of music so that everyone can at least enjoy or relate to at least one of the songs. I think you brought up many good points in the paper, and honestly cannot think of any that you didn't argue.

(Continued)
2. -Broadens students' minds through imagination
-Expand vocabulary
-Preserve memory
-Helps children become individuals and helps build a defense against being "programmed" by society
3. Poetry has had a vital role in our history as a vehicle for learning and will continue to maintain this role as we become a more modern and technology-based society.
5. I think you should talk to students and get more feedback about how poetry affects their learning as well as their view of poetry vs. their view of music.

2) (didn't understand this one...)

-Using language as an art
-leads to comprehension and retention
-pure and unrestrained form of communication
-can be taught and integrated easily
-can be musical

3)Poetry is an integral part of 21st-century learning for several reasons, and can be integrated in a number of ways.

4)
-Language is inarguably essential to human cultural existence. Poetry is an emotive, artful form of language, and thereby essential.
-Poetry lends itself to comprehension and retention.
-In a world of artificial, programmed language, poetry offers a refreshingly pure and uninhibited form of communication.
-Educators must seek to integrate poetry in a manner that reveals its linguistic and cultural relevance.
-Music must be presented and utilized as a form of poetry.

5) Absolutely get student and even co-worker feedback. Another suggestion would be to reduce the over-the-top adjectives and descriptive words in the imagery parts. It's to the point where it's a sickly-sweet way of writing. Too much of a good thing.

1. The paper starts out with the image of a kid browsing the internet for a school assignment, only half attentive and listening to his iPod. This relates to the research in that the research suggests that the current generation is in a "cultural recession" supposedly caused by the influx of available information, and rapid advances in technology.
2. –develop analytical skills
-learn to evoke a range of feelings
-stimulate personal perspectives
-add color to description
-Less artificial conversations
3. Often thought to be a frivolous pursuit nowadays, the study of poetry in actuality serves many practical purposes such as the development of analytical skills, the stimulation to form intelligent personal opinions and perspectives, and a greater understanding and mastery of the English language.
4. * Language is inarguably essential to human cultural existence. Poetry is an emotive, artful form of language, and thereby essential (Csikszentmihalyi, 1996).
*Poetry lends itself to comprehension and retention, offering a uniquely auditory and mnemonic reading experience
*In a world of artificial, programmed language, poetry offers a refreshingly pure and uninhibited form of communication
*Educators must seek to integrate poetry in a manner that reveals its linguistic and cultural relevance (echoing the successes of the Beowulf poet, Chaucer and Shakespeare). Modern implementation of poetry must speak to this generation, a generation that has seen an unprecedented explosion of highly accessible media and technology
*Music must be presented and utilized as a form of poetry.
5. If you want to continue your research, I'd loom into the possibility that ours is not the only generation that is culturally dead. If you look only at the majority of a generation, you will doubtless find that not only has every generation thus far been deprived of culture, but the human race as a whole is as well.
-Maria

2.
• In society today there is a big emphasis on mathematical and scientific methods due to the increase in technology; we also must understand poetry to develop our mind fully. Poetry makes us critical thinkers, leads to us thinking outside of the box.
• Helps use preserve history; exposes us to cultures different from our own in an understandable form to everyone
• When it is written and read genuinely, it changes and inspires people; readers become more wise and intellectual
• Words allow us to do things that are not possible (imagination). Everyday conversation is questionable and insincere but poetry is straightforward and honest.
• Poetry is everywhere, evident in music; easy to teach and understand

3. In the midst of a society overtaken with technology, reading and understanding poetry is an essential part of developing one’s mind completely.
4.
• Language is essential to life and poetry is a form of language, therefore poetry is essential to life.
• Poetry leads to the ability to comprehend things on a deeper level.
• Poetry is a different and interesting form of language.
• Teachers must be able to relate poetry to students; come up with new ways to teach it that would be more appealing to students.
• Music is a form of poetry.
5. I like the fact that you included the narrative imagery, it provided a new way of writing a formal paper that I’ve never thought of/seen before. If you were to continue your paper, you should include a little more insight into your Poetry of Song class, maybe include some specific things you do in class with us and how it helps us learn the main ideas of poetry.

American, British, Germanic Literature is different. I read a lot more Germanic Literature than British and American because it's easier to comphrend. Germanic Literature has definitions at the end of the chapter versus next to the paragraphs. That way the student has a chance to take an educated guess as to what the word or stanza means which makes more knowledge for the reader to learn. Whether or not the person has some or no experience with the language.
