G Block: Class Work 3-1-13

Welcome to March. Please read the following directions carefully and complete the necessary work by the end of the block. It is always wise to save your work as a Word file prior to posting in case you encounter any technical glitches.


1. Revisit the tone lesson from earlier this week. Compose a comparative thesis statement that acknowledges the similarities and differences between "Rock & Roll Band" and "Have a Cigar." Use the following structure: Though both A and B "contain" __________________________________, A uses ___________ and ___________ to ______________________________ while B uses ___________ and ___________  to ______________________________.

2. Display your understanding of semicolons by composing a sentence for each semicolon type. Use a vocabulary word (from any lesson) in each sentence. (between independent clauses; before a conjunctive adverb; to separate a list).

1. Though both "Rock & Roll Band" and "Have a Cigar" contain tone, "Rock & Roll Band" uses sanguineous and jovial tones to tell an uplifting story of how their band came to be, while "Have a Cigar" uses obsequious and cynical tones to question the sincerity of the man responsible for the band's success.

Though both “Have a Cigar” and “Rock & Roll Band” contain the same universal idea, “Have a Cigar” uses a more cynical and contemptuous tone to get across a kind of negative or sarcastic message while “Rock & Roll Band” uses a lyrical and jovial tone to alert the audiences that this is a more upbeat and motivational message.

Though both “rock and roll band” and “have a cigar” contain the same subject matter, “rock and roll band” uses a jovial tone and band member's point of view to show their struggle of a life in the band but how they still love it, while “have a cigar” uses cynical tone and a record labels point of view to display how the record label uses young up and coming artist just for their money.

The diminutive mouse loved cheese; cheddar is the Jerry's favorite.

I love to dance; although, I always get acute injuries.

I am not a skeptic and have been to all theses cities that portray ghostly activities; Hartford, Connecticut; Boston, Massachusetts, and Albany, New York.

1)Though both Rock & Roll Band and Have a Cigar contain a symbolic symbol, the cigar (showing wealth, and luxury),"Boston- Rock & Roll Band" uses positive tone and point of veiw to show their strugles as a band, in a positive feed. While "Pink Floyd- Have a Cigar" uses negative tone and expirience to question the sincerity and goodness of people.

2)Jenny adamantly to do her chores: therefore, she was sent to her room and was grounded.

My mother had gotten things for the beach, she got: beach chairs, towels, and sandwhiches.

The dog went to play in the backyard; it started raining so he came back inside the house.

1.) Though both “Rock & Roll Band” and “Have a Cigar” are autobiographical but contains different tones, “Rock & Roll Band” uses jovial and whimsical to display that as a band, they had a fun and enjoyable time together, while “Have a Cigar” utilizes cynical and sardonic tones to show that the speaker was attempting to lure in the person he/she was talking to.
2.) A. I like lacrosse; however, hockey is definitely my favorite sport.
B. The fastest mammal in the world is a cheetah; while the sloth is the slowest. C. Boston, Massachusetts; Honolulu, Hawaii; Santa Clara, California.

Though both “Have a Cigar” and “Rock & Roll Band” contain a jovial sense of tone, “Have a Cigar” is cynical and obsequious to question the sincerity of people but in a sarcastic manor while “Rock & Roll Band” is didactic and sanguine to inform people of the life of a musician.

A and B contain the same universal idea but in a different way. A uses imagery to try to explain about what it’s like to be on tour. B has an upbeat tone to it because the “manager” is trying to convince a boy to join the “game”( the music industry).

Although both “Rock N Roll Band” by Boston, and "Have A Cigar" by Pink Floyd contain the meaning of being famous or in a band, “Rock N Roll Band” uses Rhyme and tone to get across it’s idea of being in a rock roll band while "Have A Cigar" uses Irony and tone to get across it’s idea of trickery; The speaker is talking about the character by saying that “You're gonna go far,” but actually not even knowing the characters name.

1) There are many similarities between the two songs “Rock and Roll Band” by Boston and “Have a Cigar” by Pink Floyd; but while they do “Rock and Roll Band” uses an auto-biographical perspective and jovial tone while “Have a Cigar” uses a managerial perspective and a cynical to describe making in the music industry.
2) A) I enjoy watching shows on Netflix; my favorite is Heroes.
B) My favorite character in Heroes is Sylar; however I also like Nathan.
C) The character Hiro from Heroes has been many places, being a time traveler, like: Tokyo, Japan; Brooklyn, New York; and Dallas, Texas.
