Mr. Milliken's B Block Honors English IV: Literary Theory Research & Annotated Bibliographies

Annotated bibliographies are a very useful tool for sorting out ideas and beginning to write a daunting paper using many sources. It allows you to begin collecting meaningful quotes and analyzing before you're required to formalize your thoughts into a final paper. Your goal for today is to complete one complete citation as described on the Annotated Bibliography assignment sheet.

Citation generator: this site will create a citation in MLA format for you if you give it a title which it recognizes. Make sure you check this citation against the publication information provided in your specific copy. There is also a "cite manually" option, where you fill in a form and the site formats the information for you. This latter function is one I use more often, and I have not run into issues/mistakes going through Easybib. For you own peace of mind the first time using Easybib or any other citation generator, check it against a scholarly source like the Purdue OWL.

Scholarly search engine. Use this as a search engine when researching. It will provide only scholarly articles and allow you to be confident in your source. Remember to vary search terms if you find that one approach does not provide the content you hoped for. Going forward, any college will want you to be familiar with this skill, but their platform will look slightly different. For instance, Wheaton College uses JSTOR instead of Gale.

Lash, Scott. "Sociology of Postmodernism." Google Scholar. Routledge, n.d. Web. 10 Apr. 2014.
Postmodernism is, patently, no longer trendy. It is, however, a cultural paradigm which is arguably worthy of serious study. Marxian and Weberian social science have classically been devoted, among other things, to the exploration of linkages between social and cultural realms. This book thus consists of a coherent and unified set of serious sociological analyses of postmodernism. It addresses postmodernism in terms of social theory, the sociological investigation of culture, and the social-stratification bases of postmodernism.

Jameson, Fredric. Postmodernism, Or, The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism. Durham: Duke UP, 1991. Print. It is safest to grasp the concept of the postmodern as an attempt to think the present historically in an age that has forgotten how to think hostorically in the first place. In the case, it either "expresses" some deeper irrepressible historical impulse (in however distorted a fashion) or effectively "represses" and diverts it, depending on the side of the ambiguity you happen to favor.

Column, Guest. "The year that feminism won great victories--and women like me were told to shut up about it." New Statesman [1996] 20 Dec. 2013: 18. General OneFile. Web. 10 Apr. 2014.

Despite the overwhelming amount of time spent on praising and practicing free speech, many spend just as much time abusing it when their are differing opinions. This is especially so when the one on the receiving end is a woman. Many "dare not speak up" out of the "fear" of "abusers" and their "apologists." (Anonymous). This attitude is transparent to the large reach the patriarchy has made.

Reading this article by Philip Darbyshire about feminism in One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, he talks about how they don’t seem to appreciate the significant of the character nurse Ratched. He said that Nurse Ratched is a very important character because she exemplifies all traditional abhors in women, also that she is in a strong position of power that is much influenced. Nurse Ratched consists of being the one that people have to obey and she asserts herself as the person in charge. How Philip seesd it as Ken’s way of showing that she is more than just a trophy for men, she is her own person and proves that she doesn’t need a man to control her.

Lash Scott believes that postmodernism is no longer trendy. He believes that it is worth of study under sociological approaches such as Marxian and Weberian and there capitalistic ideas. He wants to tell the world that we are blind of what goes on behind the eyes of the government and its people. We only see what they want us to and the common man does not dig any deeper than that. Scott seems to think that we are too distracted to realize anything. He is angry and concerned about what the future may uphold.
