1. Claude Monet was a French impressionist painter, and was famous for his plein-air works. The style of impressionism was derived from the title of one of his paintings; “Impression, Sunrise.” Many of his paintings are of landscapes and scenery, with only slight human appearances within them. Édouard Manet was too, a French painter and is credited with creating the pivotal transformation from realism to impressionism. His paintings contain images of people as well as scenery in a realistic fashion. Monet and Manet both were painters of the eighteen hundredths and had very similar styles of painting. Capturing their surroundings using specific tones and details is the objective of an impressionist artist; both painters greatly succeeded at this task with astonishing accuracy and brilliancy. Monet was paint directly onto his canvas, while Manet made many sketches of his work beforehand to insure a successful concept and paintings. The main difference between the two artists is in their popularity; Monet’s works are more familiar to the eye, while Manet’s work takes longer for one to realize who the painting’s creator truly is.

2. Camille Claudel was a brilliant French sculptor and graphic artist. She captured emotions within her pieces, such as her sculpture of the “Bronze Waltz.” The “L’Age Mur” is one of her most famous works, and is still amazing to view even today. There are three figures within the sculpture, and each represents a different meaning that plays an important part as a whole. In the center, is a young man who is leaning towards a woman to his right. The older woman has her arms wrapped around him in a possessive manner; as in that he is now hers and hers only. The last figure is another woman to the left of the center man, and she is on the floor, naked, reaching in a desperate way for the man by means of pulling at his arm. She is trying to hold onto him, but it seems as if he is just walking away from her and going towards the other women. The “L’Age Mur”portrays the oldest love story known to man, and Claudel captures those emotions within her sculptures with astonishing accuracy.

3. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum lost thirteen extraordinary pieces worth approximately 300 million dollars from a heist on March 18, 1990. The men went through the museum's Dutch Room on the second floor and stole three Rembrandt pieces, including the Dutch artist's only seascape, "Storm on the Sea of Galilee." Many more paintings were stolen, including five from Degas, and one from Manet. My favorite piece is the “Stylobate Lion,” Italian, ca. 1200, Marble, 63 x 119.5 x 35.5 cm. I have always loved stone sculptures, and I even more love enjoy art within architecture. This piece is used as the base of a column that leads out to the courtyard incorporating not only art, but a useful purpose. The lion has such integrity, and portrays certain emotions, giving it hidden quality. Furthermore, I love the fact that it is indeed part of the building making it highly unlikely for someone to steal it, keeping its presence in the museum forever.

4. Eugene Delacroix's most famous painting is “Liberty Leading the People,” it portrays a very famous story. The image depicts the Americans winning the revolutionary war with Great Britain. Lady Liberty, as in the Statue of Liberty, triumphs over everyone leading them into victory. There is a man in a top hat that is pointing his gun towards the lady liberty, and the painter has made himself that man.

5. David Mach's Gorilla is made purely out of hangers.

6. My favorite Ron Mueck sculpture is “Two Women” designed in 2005. I find this one fascinating because the old women are extremely adorable, and very little compared to the people around them. Also, they are one of very few sculptures that are fully dressed. The women look very angry, but cute at the same time, and they remind me of my great grandmother very much, making this sculpture meaningful to me.

7. A) In “Girl in a paper dress” the dog depicted appears to be a poodle.

7.B) “Still Life, Beef & Vegetables”, 1992 contains a chilly pepper.

7.C) “Three Graces (at Lunch),” 1995 is where a brioche would be found on the table.

8. In Mr. Kefor’s “Concert Bill” design, he uses tans, reds, and blues, along with classic black and white.

9. In Ryan Smith’s “Taxidermy Tammy,” there are a lot of different kinds of animals in fun, unique colors in a different surrounding. Some of the animals include an octopus, moose, bear, fox, fly, hummingbird, owl, snake, zebra, and many other numerous creatures. B) In Ryan Smith’s “Pig Pile,” he depicted Mexican Wrestlers in his painting.

1. Monet vs Manet
Both Claude Monet and Edourad Manet were French impressionists in 19th century. They both were born in Paris, and used similar painting techniques that were typical of impressionists. Monet is known for his loose paintings of landscapes, which was the result of him trying to capture nature's natural sunlight. His paintings can be identified by their obvious dabs of paint. He preferred to paint nature outdoors, which differs from Manet who chose to paint inside. Manet also included people as his subjects rather than nature. His painting style was similar to Monet in the sense that it was looser than traditional styles, but his lines were more defined and more structured than Monet's.

2. Camille Claudel
"L'Age Mur" is described as an autobiographical sculpture that depicts a love triangle. Camille Claudel fell in love with Auguste Rodin while she was apprenticing for him. They were in a relationship for a long time, but Claudel wanted him to leave Rose Beuret, who he lived with and had a child with. Many believe that Camille went mad after he refused to leave her.

3. The following were stolen from the Gardner Museum:
Johannes Vermeer - The Concert
Rembrant- The Storm on the Sea of Galilee, The Lady and Gentleman in Black, and a self portrait
Govaert Flinck- Landscape with an Obelisk
Degas - La Sortie du Pelage, Cortege aux Evirons de Florence, Three Mounted Jockeys, Program of an Artistic Soiree
Manet- Chez Tortoni
Out of those stolen, my favorite was Landscape with an Obelisk by Rembrant.

4. Eugene Delacroix
The man in the top hat in Liberty Leading the People by Eugene Delacroix is believed by some to be a self portrait of the painter. More recently, however, historians have come to believe that the man might actually have been modeled after Etienne Arago, who was a theatre director.

5. David Mach
David Mach's "Gorilla" is made entirely of coathangers.

6. Rob Mueck
One of my favorite Rob Mueck sculptures is "Two Women", which is a very realistic sculpture of two elderly women standing together. The position of the two women makes it look like they are having some sort of conversation, which neither of them are enjoying. My favorite part of the sculpture is both the realistic position of the women and their hair.

7. Paul Rahilly
a) The dog in "Girl in a Paper Dress" looks like it is a poodle. b) His painting Still Life, Beef & Vegetables has a green chili pepper in it. c) His painting Brioche, Pears and Eggs has a brioche in it.

8. The "Concert Bill Sketch" has red, white, and blue as the colors.

9. Ryan Smith
a) Ryan Smith's "Taxidermy Tammy" shows a little girl creating really weird and deformed stuffed animals. b) The people in "pig pile" are described as Mexican wrestlers. The way they are piled though is similar to football.

1. Monet painted a lot of landscapes and scenes while Manet did a lot of work with people. Impressionism was about brushstokes and globs of paint rather than lines or colors and lights. Manet used more lines in his painting than monet did. Manet owned a few of Monet's works. Both were talented impressionists. They were good friends and both had beards. They were both from France and had a lot of the same subject matter.2. Camille claudel was a French sculptor and a graphic artist. Older sister was a french poet and a diplomat. In her sculpture, the figure with the cape represents death and/or time. The young girl is her, and the older man is Rodin, her lover.3. In the Garner Museum Heist, 13 paintings were stolen. Landscape with and Obelisk by Govart Flkinck, Chez Tortoni by Edouard Manet, La Sortie du Pelage by degas, The Concert by Vermeer, The Storm on the Sea of Falilee by Rembrandt, Cortege Aux Environs de Florence by Degas, Three Mountes Jockeys by Degas, Program for an Artisitc Soiree (charcoal on paper and unfinished version), A Lady and Gentlemen in Black by Rembrandt, Self Portrait by Rembrandt, Chinese Bronze Beaker or "Ku", by Shang Dynasty. My favorite is the Concert by Vermeer.
4. Eugene Delecroix's most famour painting is the Liberty Leading the people. The man with the top hat could possibly be a few different things. One being a self portrait, the theatre director Etienne Arago; or a future curator of Louvre, Frederic Villot.
5. Donald Mach's Gorilla is made of coathangers
6. Ron Mueck's sculpture that i dislike the least is the old woman in bed. She looks as if she is peacefully sleeping, bundled up in her pillows and blankets.
7. Paul Rahilly:
a. Girl in Paper dress dog = poodle
b. Still Life; beef and vegetables
c. Sentinels
8. Red, White, Blue, Black, Gray
9. Ryan Smith (wicked easy to find)
a. Taxidermy Tammy is full of a bunch of different animals with different animal parts. It looks like a cartoon from Dr. Seuss with very bold colors and a bunch of things going on at once. There also is a taxidermist who is working on the moose with the extremely tall legs; she has blue hands and bunny ears. There is a lot of very random, unusual things going on in this sketch.
b. Mexican Wrestling

1. Edouard Manet and Claude Monet are two of France's greatest impressionist painters. Manet, the older by eight years, came from a very wealthy family while Monet, on the other hand, was poor most of his life. The two were said to be close friends and often times would work togther. Monet is more commonly known for painting landscapes using tiny dabs of paint while Manet usually painted people loosely. Manet used broad, simple color areas and vivid, quick brush techniques, often painting over penciled sketches. He refused to exhibit his work as an Impressionist but Monet fully embraced the title. He used quick brushstrokes filled with individualized color. Manet used to help out Monet with money when the artist first started out. Monet returned the favor by spurring a public effort to buy Manet’s Olympia for the French nation, claiming it would become famous.

2. There are two interpretations of Camille Claudel's L'Age Mur. Most interpret this sculpture as representing the transition from youth to adult, or the passage of time. Literally translated as, The Age of Maturity, they say that the man is "life", who is moving away from "youth," the girl, toward the woman, or "old age." Yet some
believe that it is a representation of her grief, claiming that she depicts herslef begging her teacher, Auguste Rodin, to stay with her. He walks awaywith his wife, Rose, shown as an older woman with vulture-like features.

3. The works stolen from the Gardner Museum are: Vermeer's The Concert, Rembrandt's A Lady and Gentleman in Black, The Storm on the Sea of Galilee and Self Portrait, Govaert Flinck's Landscape with an Obelisk, Degas' La Sortie du Pelage, Cortege Aux Environs de Florence, Three Mounted Jockeys, and Program for an Artistic Soiree, Manet's Chez Tortoni, and a Chinese Bronze Beaker. My favorite is The Storm on the Sea of Galilee, which is Rembrant's only landscape painting. It depicts a boat being tossed amongsts the rough and violent waves of the Galilee Sea. It is said to show scene of Jesus calming the waters in the New Testament.

4. In Eugene Delacroix' most famous painting, Liberty Leading the People, the man in the top hat is a self portrait of the artist himself.

5. David Mach's Gorilla is made entirely of coat hangers.

6. My favorite Ron Mueck sculpture is Two Women. Two creepy, elderly women stand close together, seeming to stare disapprovingly at the viewer.

7. In Paul Rahilly's Girl in a Paper Dress, a poodle is shown on the left. Chili Peppers can be found in his Bread & Peppers. A brioche is located in his Still Life: Brioche and Coffee.

8. Black, white, red and blue are used in Concert Bill Sketch.

9. In Taxidermy Tammy, a girl is rearranging the parts of different animals. A giraffee body has a moose head and tiger tail and a bird has bat wings, etc. In Pig Pile, Mexican Wrestling is parodied.

1. Monet and Manet are both Impressionists and have similarities beyond their names. Compare and contrast these two artists.
- Manet and Monet were both french impressionsts, Manet was one of the first painters to begin working in the impressionist art period, he used broad colors with a quick brush technique and did many studio drawings. Manet was an influence to Monet who in contrast to Manet painting more "en plein air" (outside). Monet, like Manet, also used quick brush strokes but, unlike Manet, he put paint directly on the canvas without sketching the composition out first. Monet also used individualized color and focused on capturing the effects of light and color on nature.

2. Who is Camille Claudel? Examine her "L'Age Mur" and identify the 3 figures depicted.

3. Identify the works stolen during the infamous Gardner Museum heist. Identify and describe your favorite piece.
- "The Concert" by Johannes Vermeer, "The Storm of the Sea of Galilee" by Rembrandt van Rijn, and "Landscape with an Obelisk" by Govaert Flinck. My favorite stolen piece is "The Concert" which depicts a two women and one man at a piano, one woman is playing the piano while the other seems to be singing.

4. Summarize the "legend" behind the man with the top hat in Eugene Delacroix's most famous painting.

1. While both are considered Impressionist painters, Monet and Manet have different painting styles. Monet's brush strokes are light, wispy. He painted seires paintings often of foot bridges, haystacks, and water lillies. Manet's brushstrokes are similar but his paintings have a darker light source, where as Monet's work tends to be sunlit. Manet uses lots of black paint in his work, unlike Monet who often avoids using black.

2. Camille Claudel is a French sculptor and artist. The figures in her L'Age Mur are suppose to be her begging a man, Rodin to stay with her. Instead he is being carried off by an older, fiend-like woman, who is suppose to be Rodin's wife. Some say its depicting a man going through "the age of maturity" moving from a young woman to an older one.

1. Claude Monet was an impressionist and some of his most famous works were during the impressionist movement. Monet started out poor and then later became rich; he then bought a big house so he could paint on larger canvases. Manet started out painting realism but then he moved on to impressionism. He was a painter and a printmaker. He was well educated and came from a wealthy family. He thought that art should represent the ideas of the present rather than the past. Both artists were impressionists.
2. Camille Claudel was a French sculptor. She found a mentor who was much older than her and they fell in love. She was his muse and she gave herself over completely to him. This love affair drove her crazy and she had to be put into a mental asylum. The figures in the sculpture “L’Age Mur” are the tree women symbolizing the love triangle that she was involved in. One of the figures is Auguste Rodin, Claudel’s mentor in art as well as lover. The begging, naked women L’Implorante represents the emotional tie that Camille had to Rodin and how it drove her insane. La Valse symbolizes the relationship of love. The sculpture is supposed to remind the viewer of the dangers of all of ourselves to another human being.
3. The works that were stolen in the infamous Gardner Museum heist were Lady and Gentleman in Black by Rembrandt, Vermeer’s The Concert and Manet’s Chez Tortoni, and several Edgar Degas sketches. The Vermeer, Rembrandts, Degas, Manet and other valuable works are still waiting to be discovered.
4. The legend behind the man with the top hat in Eugene Decroix’s most famous painting is actually him. He had said that even though he had not fought for the father land he could still paint himself in and make it look like he had and he can paint on its behalf.
5. David Mach’s gorilla is made of… coat hangers!
6. My favorite Ron Mueck sculpture is Two Women. It is two life like women but they are not real. They look so real, just like two old ladies are just standing on a platform. I find it creepy and that is why I love it.

c) "Three Graces at Lunch" it's on the table
8. The colors that are used are light brown, blue, red, and black and white.

1. Édouard Manet was the one who started Impressionism and Claude Monet was the one who perfected it, almost. They both had quick brushstrokes as they painted their works. Monet, however, preferred to bring a lot of color to nature in his paintings. He did not have any time for sketching his work; he just went right into painting with great colors. Manet took the time to sketch out his drawings first and then he painted over his sketches. These two painters were close friends and were born in the same place: Paris, France. Besides their names looking alike, their faces did as well. Both of them had kind of long beards and mustaches. Their heads were kind of shaped the same, also.

2. Camille Claudel was a sculptor from France who did mostly graphic art. “L’Age Mur” shows three people in a pose. The woman is reaching for the other two from the gorund. She is said to be Claudel. She is reaching for a man, said to be Rodin, who she had an affair with. He is wrapped up with his wife, Rose. Claudel is begging for Rodin to take her back.

3. The thieves stole three Rembrandt paintings, “The Concert” by Vermeer, “Landscape with an Obelisk” by Govaert Flinck, five Degas sketches, and a Manet portrait. They stole a Chinese bronze beaker and a bronze eagle. I like Govaert Flinck’s painting because it is a nice landscape picture. I like looking at landscapes.

4. The man in the top hat is there to show respect for the woman in the middle.

5. David Mach’s “Gorilla” is made out of hangers.

6. I like “Head” because it is the least creepy of all of his sculptures. It is actually really big in size. It really looks like a real head. Everything is so precise: the hair, the eyes, the mouth. I think it is really cool looking.

7. The breed of dog in the painting is a poodle. “Three Graces (At Lunch)” has a chili pepper and brioche in it.

8. In your “concert bill sketch,” you use the colors of red, white, blue, and a light grey-ish brown color in the background.

9. In “Taxidermy Tammy,” the girl on the ladder is standing above many animals displayed in the picture. There is a variety of different colors throughout the painting, which makes it more interesting. The sport I think it is parodying is cheerleading because they pick each other up and stand in poses. It kind of looks, to me, like the animals and the girl are doing something like that.

1. Both Monet and Manet were born in Paris. Manet was eight years older than Monet. Manet owned several works by Monet and were often mistaken for each other. Both of their work was refused by the Salon Jury. Monet was considered to be the father of impressionism, and so was Manet. Manet painted Monet in his studio boat, Monet painted in his studio boat.

2. Camille Claudel was a sculptor. L’Age Mur meant The Age of Maturity in French. The three figures depicted are a young woman, a man, and a God reaching over the mans shoulder back at the girl. The man appears to be leaving the girl behind and the Godly figure doesn’t want him to, like letting go of innocence.

3. The works stolen were:

Vermeer, The Concert

Rembrandt, A Lady and Gentleman in Black

Rembrandt, The Storm on the Sea of Galilee

Rembrandt, Self Portrait

Govaert Flinck, Landscape with an Obelisk

Chinese Bronze Beaker or “Ku”

Degas, La Sortie Du Pelage

Degas, Cortege aux Environs de Florence

Degas, Three Mounted Jockeys

Degas, Program for an Artistic Soiree

Degas, Program for an Artistic Soiree

Mamet, Chez Tortoni
The Rembrandt self portrait is my favorite piece stolen. It is not a typical painting, it really caught my attention. It looks like a rough sketch but it is a final work of art. It looks more like a real person than some other self portraits I’ve seen.

4. The man in the top hat has been debated. It is said to be a self portrait by Delacroix and that suspicion has been found untrue. It has also been suggested that it was the theatre director Etienne Arago. others say that it is the future curator of the Louvre, Frederic Villot.

5. David Mach’s Gorilla is made out of coat hangers.

6. My favorite sculpture of Ron Mueck’s is the Baby. Babies being born is a beautiful thing and this sculpture magnifies it to great extents. Helping people get past the blood and guts because there aren’t any. It is easier to see the beauty in it.

7. B. In Bread and Peppers you find a chili pepper.

C. In Brioche, Pears and Eggs you find the brioche.

A. A poodle is depicted in "Girl in a Paper Dress"

8. The colors used are red, blue, white pink, sky blue, black, and maroon.

9.
A.The subject matter in taxidermy Tammy is very strange. Animals are sewn together to make new animals. There is a girl at the top of that ladder with a surgical saw, which leads me to believe that she is the one who cut up the animals. The scene is a little crazy and It's hard to understand but it looks like Tammy has gone crazy herself.

B. In Pig Pile I see Mexican wrestling going on.

1. Manet was rich and Monet was poor; both are the two greatest artists France ever produced; Manet was eight years older than Monet; Monet had a great love of trains/train stations while Manet did not; Manet preferred people to things v. Monet who preferred to paint things; Monet painted the trains (and the clouds of steam/smoke billowing up from the machinery) and Manet painted those who rode them; both impressionists

2. Camille Claudel was a French sculptor/graphic artist, and the older sister of Paul Claudel, the French poet and diplomat. In her "L'Age Mur," the three figures depicted are Camille herself, Rodin, who's mistress was Camille, and Rodin's wife.

3. The works stolen during the Gardner Museum heist:
1. Rembrandt, "The Storm on the Sea of Galilee"
2. Rembrandt, "A Lady and Gentleman in Black"
3. Rembrandt, self-portrait

10. Degas, Cortege aux Environs de Florence
11. Degas, Three Mounted Jockeys
12. Degas, La Sortie du Pelage
13. Degas, Program for an Artistic Soiree
My favorite piece is Rembrandt's "The Storm on the Sea of Galilee," which is a seascape painting that depicts a crew on a boat that are holding on for their lives as a storm rages on the Sea of Galilee.

4. The "legend" behind the man with the top hat in Eugene Delacroix's most famous painting "Liberty Guiding the People" is that the man is a self-portrait of the artist.

5. David Mach's "Gorilla" is made of coat hangers.

6. My favorite Ron Mueck sculpture is of a five meter long baby.

7. a. standard poodle
b. Still Life, Beef & Vegetables, 1992
c. Three Graces (at Lunch), 1995

8. red, blue, and a brown/tan/gray color

9. a. The subject matter in "Taxidermy Tammy" consists of various animals of abnormal colors, such as a blue bear and a yellow zebra, and each seems to be in a hypnotic state.
b. Wrestling is parodied in his version of "Pig Pile."

1.Monet and Manet are easily mistaken for one another. They worked together for some projects. Monet is known for creating impressionism whereas Manet perfected it.
2.Camille Claudel was a graphic artist and a French sculptor. The women are herself, Rodin, and an old lady's arms.
3.The works stolen from the Gardner Museum include four works from Rembrandt van Rijn, drawings from Edgar Degas, Monet, and Flinck. The Concert by Johannes Vermeer's 34 known-paintings. I like The Storm on the Sea of Galilee because I can feel the emotion and I believe the use of colors is amazing.

I'm REALLY LATE on this... but... I did do it!

1. Manet did more studio style drawing, painting over penciled sketches. He, like Monet, is considered one of the first impressionists, however he refused to exhibit his work as an impressionists. Monet on the other hand, was an out of the closet improssionist who was obsessed with capturing fleeting effects of light and color in nature using quick and effective brush strokes.

2. Camille Claudel is a French sculptor and graphic artist. She is the older sister of French Diplomat and poet Paul Claudel. "L'Age Mur" is a sculptur that seems to depict age taking a man away from a young woman. It is said that the man is her lover Rodin who was significantly older than her and that the sculpture showed her sadness that they could not be together.

3. Rembrant's Storm of the Sea of Galilee and a small self-portrait of himself, Vermeer's The Concert, and 5 Degas and 1 from Monet we stolen from the Gardner Museum.

4. The man with a top hat is really a self portrait of Delacroix himself.

5. The gorilla is made out of hangers.
